Where is the mangled black lump circled meant to be?

 

looks like the bottom of a torn dust cover the way the bit above is sitting off center.

 

at the top.

this is your 'bump stop' which has obviously broken free and fallen down the shaft. they arn't that necessary unless you plan on jumping down stairs with you car soon. they stop any huge compression of your suspension damaging itself by taking the blow. those little notches and grooves are meant to be there. this can be fixed by getting it replaced -(expensive) or just by putting some roof and gutter silicon in between it and the shaft when it is in the top most possition. (up inside the floppy plastic tube, as high up as you can.)
