My car is making a funny repetitve thud noise at the rear end of the car when starting off. orinally happened when you put too much power in, only happens in 1st and 2nd. And it's getting worse. It used to only do it if you launch hard. Now it does it if u launch normally. I can't launch it without it making the thud thud noise twice. I decided to drop the clutch while it was making the noise and the whole car shook! Haven't done it in 3rd but I haven't tried starting off in 3rd. It's like the car struggles when going from a stationary position. I thought it was wheelspin at first, and then as it happened more often, I thought maybe exhaust, but it's not loud enuf to be backfire and the sounds repeats too often. I was thinking maybe the diff? Any help would be much appreciated.
re bad noise If its a deep sounding thud, check all your mounts, engine, gear box, split tail shaft center rubber,(if it has a spilt shaft) check to see any bushes on and around your diff are ok, shockers, may take awhile, but check everything that you can, someone else may have an idea on what it could be, just check everything, cheers jase
In my case ... take it to Gavin Woods and pay him more money  But in your case... I wouldn't have a clue. I don't touch my Z unless i'm 100% certain i know what i'm doing. I prefer having the job done properly. Then if something goes wrong. I can blame them Fate... Slidin
k, thanks for the advice guys car's getting some body work done right now, But after that I'll get it looked at asap.
Re: Check tailshaft centre bearing I've got the same problem and it wasn't the centre bearing, I got a one piece d/shaft, still clunks
Had this noise in my econobox Charade was a busted engine mount. Only really made the noise when the car was cold or it was cold outside though.
does it sound like your gearbox is bumping up against your floor pan? Thats what happened in my zed, and it turned out to be a centre bearing. I initially thought i'd ripped a gearbox mount somehow, which i replaced, only to have the same problem. Anyway, in my searchings for the problem, i grabbed the tailshaft and it had alot of play in it... and i mean ALOT... i'm talking something like 30-50mm of play, which was the banging noise i copped on take off and sometimes in second gear. anyways, a few hundred dollars later, all was well!
Re: does it sound like What's involved in fixing a busted engine mount?? Cause I mainly get this noise when it's cold outside...is it unsafe to drive with a busted engine mount?
