Hi All, I have run into some whats sounds like serious issues with my lifters. It seems that one of them are faulty. I have to give a good boot to get the REALLY bad ticking to stop. This is all a result of some bad fuel i put in my car last thursday... I have fully serviced and changed fluids. Cleaned my filters and all is ok with regard to fluids... would appreciate any help with this.. Oh for the record i have done a search in the tech section and it only shows how to clean the lifters not remove them... Terry
Bad fuel will not cause lifter problems Make sure it is lifter noise too before you get too excited. It may be a noisy injector. If you are sure it is a noisy lifter you should try an oil flush additive first as it may just be gunked up.
How can you tell what the noise is? Im interested because my car has developed a VERY concerning tapping/ticking sound. Started it for the first time in about two weeks last night, and the noise was so loud i could hear it clearly over the engine revs, went for a quick spin and it was still there. I cant pin point where it is comming from. Im a little worried...
How can you tell what the noise is? Did you have any lifter noise at cold start before last night? my car hadn't been running for quite some time "6 months" lifter noise was loud, and didnt go away for about 15 minutes, after the engine had reached opperating tempture. Since then i have no noise at all. Lifter noise sounds a little like loud ticking, just like you disscribed.
I didn't seem to quieten down... there has always been a ticking sound but it ways way louder last night. Plus the care was running rough. Revs where up around 9-950 and was a tad smokey for a around 10-15 secs. after a drive revs where down to around 750ish. drove the car til it reached about 85 deg. I thought it would have gone or quietened after a drive. Didn't seem to help. Are there any tests to know whats wrong? I have hooked it up to my consult- no error codes.
Re: I didn't seem to quieten down... the only way to tell is have an experienced ear listen to it mate if i rev my engine out in neutral i get a loud rattling noise as soon as i let go of the throttle, work that one out.. pretty sure its lifters.. only time it does it though.. could be timing, but it dont sound like pinging
Fuel has nothing to do with lifters, to remove them though, you have to pull off the manifold, pull the cam covers and then cams off then just use a magnet to suck the lifters upwards out of the heads.
Another thing that can sound like that is if a vuccum line has come off Somewhere. Would also explain the rough idle. I had a 4mm line come off the balance bar and i could hear a loud ticking sort of sound at idle i ended up chasing it to the hose. If i put my finger over it forms a vaccum the noise goes and the idle gets smoother  Just an experience that threw me off a little thought it's remote but it may help
After i had put the fuel in it started pinging its head off... (LONGISH) The car almost sounded/felt like it was going to detonate. But i pumped it with octane booster. My oil was just under full so i topped it up. After i while the sound was going away slowly slowly. The noise is a very loud ticking. When you back off the accelerator it sounds/feels liek there is something loose. I realise that fuel cannot cause your lifter to fail. But when i drained my oil it had a real bad/funny smell to it. I was told that the oil had broken down and may have caused some overheating, which may have screwed the lifter. I am no guru but when it warms up the sound goes away NOW. Before it was there no matter what.. I put some Nulon lifter treatment in to see if it helps. From previous experiences it worked a treat. Also i have removed and treated most of the fuel. My car is running on additives not fuel at the moment :LOL:. I also spent $90 on 4 litres of v300 motul 15W 50. So its not thin and not shit oil in my car. So to some it up.. * At cold start i have loud tapping/rattling * After the car warms up it runs ok. * Every morning i start it i want to out my fist through the engine. but i figured i would come off second best.:LOL::LOL: * I feel like its going to cost me a fair amount unless someone has a bright idea.????? Appreciate any help. Terry
Symptoms sound like an exhaust manifold gasket leak When it heats up the noise goes way, would be from the manifold expanding with the heat and sealing off the gap.
Re: Symptoms sound like an exhaust manifold gasket leak second this comment. For ages I though the commodore had crook lifters. It got better when warm but was still at a low level under the normal engine noise. Turned out I have a manifold leak on cylinder 4 and 6. Could have sworn blind I had a serious problem. It was an easy fix.
that would make sense in most cases but there is a grinding noise when you back off the accelerator. And if i was leaking from exhaust manifold i should feel a difference under boost. especially when you get up there. There is a bad vibration when cold... I will check and see if there is any more air leaking out the side in question, in comparison to the other side....
Turbochargers need lots of gas to make them do the work.... the pitiful amount of gas you would be losing through a crack in an exhaust manifold gasket would not affect a turbo's efficiency enough to notice.
Terry... If you think it's the lifters, put a bottle of lifter cleaner in the oil. Then do an oil change 2 weeks later (I suggest 15W-40 or thicker). If it is the lifters, you will notice an improvment.
SIM i put the lifter treatment in last thrusday as well as 15w-50 motul v300 oil... The noise is reducing and not happening as frequently.. I think maybe with all the additives in it, it is alleviating some of the stress. I also had a thought that maybe the oil pickup is partially blocked and when it warms up and the oil passes thrrough easier it actually lubrictates all th eengine parts.. more thoughts would be appreciated.
