My alternator finally bit the bullet, probally due to the pwr steering leeking on it. Anyone (probally SoR) able to come round to help remove it and be able to tell me if the pwr steering caused the failure. Fluid levels seem unchanged the whole time the cars been on the road but there has always been a lot of white surface markings around the pump. BTW I called a Nissan dealership and they wanted $1600 for an OEM TT alternator... i told tem Id think about it  Anyway if someone could come round to help fault find that would be great.
an easy way to check if its the alternator is to start her up and give a few rpms and check the voltage with a volt meter if its charging it will go up. if the voltage goes down then the alternator is stuffed. best bet is to take it out (20min job) and take it to a electric to get it checked out might just need some new brushes good luck
i would have told them something different with a few more @#$%!s hehe. get one from a wreckers. http://www.twinturbo.net/net/viewmsg.aspx?forum=technical&msg_id=929376 click above for a HOW TO... ive had a reasonable amount of experiance with cars, but im newish to zeds, but this sunday i would be free to offer a hand if you want let me know via PM
Re: how does a pwr steering leak cause a alternator to fail ?? Apparently the pump sits above the alternator and the PS fluid is corrosive so i guess thats what stuffs them up. This is what i heard anyway.
I tried to get home from the foundry on Thursday night back to Thornlie, I needed a chase car to jump me 3 times on the way home I only got 1-2km burst between charges. When I finally got home I left it running and pulled the positive off the battery and it killed the car instantly. Ive always been told this is a sure fire way to find out.
I put it down to the result of driving my car too long with the battery light flashing every now and then for a split second and the 3 bottom row lights on the bottom left of the dash (lights, hicas, brake) flash at the same time. The battery light became more and more frequent and longer over time and also caused the pwr steering to feel heavy while driving every now and then
Re: I put it down to power steering fluid leaking on alternator usually causes a fire actually.. most engine fires on ED falcons are caused by this..
I picked up a s/h alternator from a wreckers for 200 bucks, spent 70 getting the bearing machined and then fitted and haven't had a problem since. Never call nissan!
Re: i would have told them something different with a few more Cheers for the offer, will see how I go with getting parts. I may leave it for a bit a just do a mini tech day with other stuff now that I got the FMIC and boost controller etc..
my alternator also caked itself a while back.. cost me $200 fitted and hasnt stuffed up yet been real good..
