Targa Leak & Short Shifting Prob

Prob 1: Whenever it rains, I'm getting a leak from where the drivers side targa panel joins the front outside edge of the roof... Has anyone had simliar issues, and any idea of how hard/expensive it is to replace a seal up there?

Prob 2: My Zed has a short shift gear-stick and heavy duty clutch. At normal/granny speeds and revs it changes gears fine, but even after a fair amount of experimentation (Slow shifting, fast shifting, holding the clutch in for ever..), I can't slip into 4th gear at higher speeds without getting a crunch on the way through... It's not a mincing buzz-saw noise like when you totally miss a gear, it just catches, and makes the sort of noise that makes you think you'll probably have to replace the gearbox if it continues....

    Any suggestions?

For the targas check the drain holes aren't clogged up, poke some fairly stiff wire down there. Give that a try, but is the leak under heavy rain or light rain?

sounds like your 4th gear synchro is gone mine does it to

Cheers, I'll give it a shot..

The leak is only after heavy rain, when there's plenty of water slopping around on the roof.

    It's frustrating..

and hard to appreciate the performance, when you're focusing more on not jarring your hand on the gear change!

Re : Targa Leak & Short Shifting Prob.......

Prob 1 : Next time you have a nice hot, sunny day, take the targas off and lay them in the sun (inside facing up) so the seals get warmed up and soften. They will (hopefully) expand to their original shape (they get the crap squashed out of them when they are on the car), then apply a rubber preservative of some form to the seals. You may have to do this a couple of times to make a difference but you have nothing to lose.

Prob 2: Try changing your g/box oil to Redline shockproof and see if that improves it, otherwise I suggest you learn to "double shuffle", it's much cheaper and easier than pulling the box to replace a synchro

I have both these problems as well...

Leak only occurs after heavy rain too.

As for the crunch.. I get this but only if I try to snap 4th at high revs. :( I also get a bit of sticking/ notchiness when trying to put into 1st and get a little bit of notch when changing to 2nd. This has all become more obvious after getting my clutch changed 300kms ago.
Will be replacing gearbox oil with Redline Lightweight Shockproof gear oil soon, even though I just got new oil put in when I got the clutch done..

I'm also still confused as whether to try MT-90 or the lighweight oil?? :embarrassed:

Go the shockproof it has a much higher "hot rated" viscosity than the MT90. There's no such thing as "overkill" when it comes to zeds

i have fixed this problem with the leaky t-top

do as the others have said, clean the drain holes, turn the targa tops over in the sun, but also clean the rubber seal so it is dirt free, and then rub a very thin layer of petorlium jelly ( vasoline ) on the rubber surface, this will repel any water, so it then never gets inside the car, i was told this when i was 18 with a leaky sunroof, this works well...

Another thing to try for leaking targas

Mine was leaking on the passenger side but not the drivers side and I had tried cleaning the drain holes only to find they were clean. I poured a bit of water into the gutter with the targa off and found the water was not going down the drain hole but running past the end of the seal instead. I had a look at the drivers side to see what was different and found that seal had some of that thick black sticky stuff (the technical term for it I believe :) ). I sealed the passenger side with some similar "stuff" and have had no leaks since on that side. Worth checking.
