Has anyone come to a certain decision weather you can do a heater core replacement with the dash intact in an Manual TT? last night on the way to sydney mine gave in the ghost, and it's bypassed for now but these Canberra nights are getting cold! (minus 3 last night..)

From the readup, I've got no problem changing it in car, but as far as a dash pull goes.. I'd rather pay someone the $$... <sigh>

I love to hate these cars sometimes.

im soon to tackle this down myself, taking out the dash completely...

there is a tech about replacing a heater core without pulling the dash...im pretty sure that is an overseas model....out heater core are dead centre of the dash area....im sure if you did try and tackle it with the dash in you most likely will break many things and not do a clean job...

its also a good idea to fix that lift where the vents are if it already hasnt been....

the techs are pretty good and pulling the dash isnt some what hard....its just patients, have a polite hand and you will be able to do it...

    Benny_C About as subtle as...

The whole replacing the heater core with dash in-tact thing is mainly

    targeted for the Autos.

You can still use the same techniques and same process in a manual - BUT you just need to remove the clutch peddle assembly first (not too hard).

Then you have the room to play around under there and do the replacement without removing the whole dash.

    BlueZ Oldie but a goodie

And also the clutch master cylinder

I've done a couple of dash-in heater cores on autos. It's relatively simple, except for the screw in the front of the heater box. It's a PITA in an AT so I don't know how I'd go, having to negotiate around the master cylinder as well.
Which is harder - pull the dash or remove the clutch pedal and master cylinder?

    no no

there is no difference in heatercore location between our cars and overseas model.... the "non dash removal" method relates to auto cars as they dont have a clutch, or clutch bosster or you have some limited room to remove the heatercore from underneath without taking out the dash.... you could also do this in a manual I guess but you would have to remove the clutch and clutch booster to do it...

When I did mine with red32's help, we just ripped out the dash and did it that way.

    Cheers

    Dash out it is then!

and I have one day to do it (tomorrow)! I got a new core today from around the corner ($170) and I'll just cross my fingers I guess and see how I go.

    Seats out or seats in?

    IB ?????

    Some tips ...>>

Clutch pedal and booster are easy to get out if you want to do it dash in.

Hardest part of removing the heater core is removing the screw through the firewall.

Buy some zip lock bags. As you take out a part, put all the screws for that part in a zip lock bag and tape it to the part.

Start by removing both seats (probably steering wheel as well.

    Good luck.

Ziplock bags are a great idea. When I did the engine EVERYTHING

went into bags with description texta'd onto it. Made assy. a whole lot easier.

    Sheesh! (pics)

Well I've spend a good chunk of the day working on it, took out all the dash parts and the dash itself, as well as the fan blower etc.. and eventually got out the heater box in one unit. I'll work on replacing the core tomorrow and then try to figure out where everything goes.

Wasn't too difficult actually, just a bit of work. The american instructions are useless because they are for LHD cars and talk about doing the core from our passenger side whereas it's on the drivers side. Just take out the whole box! Don't try to do it with the box in there, it's very easy to get the whole box out (3 bolts).

What also saved me at least an hour or 2 was using a cordless impact wrench for all the bolts (lots!) was a great help.

Here are some pics so far!
