Incats - a large passenger catamaran builder in Hobart

Has an affiliated school of Aluminium welding, and have been employing apprentice welders in the past, often signing on mechanics and builders from around Tasmania who wanted a change and more pay - there's now a shortage of both here. The company has had its ups and downs, but it might pay you to contact them. Moving to Tassie, though... I suppose that's a pretty big ask. (Although we've got, arguably, the most interesting roads in Australia, and a really keen group of Z enthusiasts, too!)

    As a welder myself.....

dont do aluminium, as it sucks. Get yourself either a boliermakers ticket which can be done by either TAFE or apprenticeship. The best is Stainless Steel, good money and easy to weld.

TIG pays more as a MIG welder you can find a dime a dozen. If you get your tickets the best place to work is on a union site in the city, very good money or a mine in WA. I do a bit of contract work and the amount of work out there is heaps, you just gotta be good.....very good.(like me:D)

Oxy welding is boring and ARC welding is old school. There are heaps of tickets out there to get....it just depends what you want to do.

    Max:thumbsup:

from a limited knowledge base, i would be wary of studying at

"commercial" vocational schools providing "certicate" courses ... head for tafe accredited courses for your welding studies ....

lol union sites, soon in Melb there will only be 1 working day / week.. I t

hink now there is only 150ish actual working days thanks to the union. They are good in one way, but screw the guys managing the projects in another way, bring back 7 working day weeks!!.

If you want to bludge on a working site and get paid >$1000 / week, come to Melbourne :)

Gotta disagree with you on this one Max.

Spent the last ten years in an Ally workshop.

Why do I like working in ally? - clean, easy to drill, easy to grind, nice and light compared to steel.

More important - takes real skill to weld and finish properly. (Also helps to have quality welding equipment)

We had heaps of boilermakers come from steel shops to work at our place, and only about one in ten made the grade. The others were all too rough.

As to WazTTed's question - plenty of Ally boatbuilders in WA - go have a talk to them.

damn i wish.. being an apprentice plumber doing commercial houses sucks!

i think an apprenticeship would be the best way to go.. would put you in a betetr position for a job over someone who jsut has a certificate but it also depends on how much money you make already.. apprenticeships dont pay much i only get $250 a week in my first year :(

    What is a commercial house?

Isn't a house, by definition, residential and not commercial?

Not sure if this relates - but

We do electrical stuff and our particular department do not do residential at all except in the instance where - eg: Manager of Coles Smithfield (Cairns Area) lives in a home owned by Coles - therefore this is a comercial house and we will fix in this instance only...

"random house" ..??? "house" ..as in tv program ..... ??? "shithouse"

as in your post ..??? .. could spend heaps of time exploding the limited application of your interpretation .. but assume it was meant to be lighthearted, scott, and still have heaps of pre-coona to do .. so will leave it there ....:LOL::LOL::thumbsup::thumbsup::wacko:
