Ive been looking for anew car for a while and as you might remember posted about it a couple of months ago.

Well after all this time we got it pinned down to 2.

The rule where soft to or coupe, sexy {that's a bone of contention}.
It had to hold it value over 3 years.
It had to come with 6 years warranty
    cruise control
    the roof control must be able to work for a person with a bad back. { both my wife and I have had some really bad spinal injuries over the years.{ I can push 1,5 tonne but I cannot lift 500 grams over my head and dont ask me to bowl a cricket ball.}

Nice to have is close servicing, mp3 player, big horse power, rear wheel drive, and individuality.

the last of the finial losers where.

Z350. It came to a shock to me that the car on the top of my list was let down by poor construction cheep plastic and the poorest value around. Drive it out of the dealer and you drop $15000 as you left the door on a $70 grand plus car. It felt lifeless remote and boring.

    Holden tigra.

This little beauty held in to the very end. Finally what let it down was it is a 18 grand shopping trolley being sold for $34 grand. Nice design great features too heavy too slow and no rear vision.

    Holden Astra Convertible.

Believe it or not these car gain money for 12 months before they slide after 3 years they still market for $7 grand less than retail. It is let down as boring too refined and gutless. Plus the wife just didn't like it.

    Mazda RX8

I didn't believe that this would be in the price range. With very heavy discounting you can get on $12 grand less than retail. What let it down was the said discounting and poor fuel consumption. The wife did not like the interior at all sighting that it had more tack plastic than a " Duran Duran concert".

    Mazda Mx5

No I thought this would have made to the end this car. COTY this year. I wonder did the journo's drive this sober? Remote and a very nasty soft top to open and close. the plastic is starting to fall apart on the demo cars. sorry Mazda try again.

    Cateringham 7.

    this car is still on the sort list. i just want one shame it is totally impractical and it home built.{ I just dont have time to build one.}

so what are the contenders then.

first up... VW beetle soft top.
I love it .... OK it gutless but very refined little car with all the mod cons in it this is the poor loser. if we cannot get the the car we want made at the price we want this will be the car. very safe all gimmicks and I look cool in it.{ bugger the wife}.

    the final is

    GABBY already knows the feeling

    MINI COOPER S CABRIO

blue in colour , full leather, 17 inch rims and a host of goodies thrown at the motor.... More news and hopefully some pic tomorrow

    LOVE YOUR CHOICE:thumbsup:

I myself am even interested in it's sleek design and shape.

They've got a lot of umph for a tiny car. Very stylish interior, and so smoooth to drive as well.

    :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

    GREAT CHOICE

If I ever get rid of the Zed, thats what i'll be aiming to buy :).

I first started looking at these when an old guy in his 80's tried racing me through surfers. I was honestly suprised at the power the little car had, just before i pulled away.(to the speed limit i mean ;))

Can't wait to see some piccies

    1) Peugot 307 CC

Pretty car with paddle shift auto or 6 speed manual. The 2 litre FSI one is great

    2) Renault Magaine soft top

    Glass fold down roof

IMHO the Mini is overpriced FWD cut down base model engine 3 series BMW. Too small for everyday use. And very gimmicky. Stupid instruments.

The Beatle is just a bloody joke with its piss weak 1600CC petrol engine and stupid idiot long dash. The bloody thing at 100klms/hr is revving at 3500 revs! WTF! Its crap.

The dickheads dont even offer the 2.0 FSI engine out of the golf. That would have almost saved it

The Peugot is very very nice. So much so My girl freind actually bought one. Full Leather, GPS, super good auto.

Interestingly the auto actually downshifts as you slow down so you are always in the right gear. Very Very nice.

We actually drove all those cars you mentioned on the way to getting the Peugeot.

    Whoa go easy on Herbie!

Never driven the convertible or the 1.6L model but my Mum's bright yellow 2.0l is very good at what it was designed to do. It'll pull looks everywhere you go, especially after my Dad fitted 18 inch chrome wheels (still look tiny given the size of the wheel arches) The quality of the plastics in the VW would be arguably better than any mentioned so far, and the thing isn't all that gutless and is actually quite planted, perhaps its the wider boots is wearing now?

Lucky for you, still yet to test the mini

I sold my zed less than two years ago and still havent been able to find anything to whet my appetite (well within reasonable price anyway). I've driven the falcon XR6 turbo and whilst a quick car it just felt like what it is - a BIG family car with poke. The RX8 I agree is so nice to drive but its gonna suck through the juice. The 350Z convertible is awesome but impractical. Might go and try the Cooper S. Although the feeling is definately there. Might splash out on another TT300. Bugger it. Any suggestions for cars under 55k guys. Is PHATT still for sale DUB

new update pics will be next week

sorry about no pic's yet but it pissed down on the days of the test drives so when we pic up the car next week I'll post them then.

on Saturday it was test drive day 2 with just the Cooper S and the Vdub back to back.

It started off with the mini first....... badly and it went down there from then for 3 Mini's We tested. I should have stopped at the first breakdown but I was stubborn.

Run out to the car press the door button and 2 litres of rain water dropped onto the driver and passenger seat. {OK this is a bummer and a design fault } I passed the off as character building. Thank goodness the car refused to start, .... next car please.

The next was a NA version with a auto box. Now if anyone can pull off a auto box in a 150 cc car BMW can I thought. The box flared so badly on up changes I thought the car was going to stop and roll backwards down the hill before it picked the next gar.
... next car please waiter and full strength please no more decafs..... Don't even think of that combo and dont drive one.

The red S Cabrio was next and no amount of trying to find out why half the idiots light were on nor why the handbrake wouldn't hold or even the litre of water on the seat would faze me. It was great however I did have to shout to get above the rattles in front dash, the squeaks in the roof or the clunks in the doors as we went the the motorway.

I'm sorry BMW/mini I'm not going to spend close to 60 grand on a shopping trolley that has more problems than a P76.

Remember that this car is for my wife as a everyday driver. Safety and reliability must be first. Maybe in years time the quality will be in the product. Its just not up to scratch yet. Its a shame its a first rate drivers car that could be a world leader. I love that car maybe in a couple of years.

That left the beetle and its poor off 2.0 motor.
The car starter was dead quite. everything worked, It went very well for a overweight four cylinder car down on power. The best thing was the Getrag tiptronic auto box in it. My wife love playing gears in it and in auto-mode I can still blow off dunnydores with out revving to 8 grand as on in the mini.

This car as a demo with 500 ks on it and fully option out was at a very good drive away price and a great deal on the trade in. I worked out I lost $500 on the trade against pushing it through the auctions.

The same kit out for the VW would cost over $58 grand for the Mini. Plus I get a 6 year unlimited kms warranty. So I'm pretty happy and the wife gets a nice cute silver VW convertible. with heated full leather seats, 7 stack mp3 player and 10 speakers, 16 inch alloys, tiptronic gearbox, rear wind break, and pink on silver plates. for under $40 grand.

The only problem is I dont think I can been seen dead or alive driving a beetle wit pink number plates.... The things you do..

    Pic next Sunday. shadow

Re: Whoa go easy on Herbie!

Yes, but you cant buy the 2 litre one anymore!! on the nromal beatle with roof.

    They dropped it.

I think they still offer it on the cabrio though.

The choice is 1.6 petrol or 1.9 diesel for the sedan. Thats it !!

The reason is that they beleive the engine capacity isnt a factor for their target market. Young women drivers!!

    3500 revs at 100 KLMS/hr is bullshit!!
