Stopped into Shell Servo tonight, noticed they have something called "unleaded 95" (95 octane rating) aparently optimax is 98 and regular unleaded is 92.

I quized the guy working there saying that they are gunna release a 100 soon.

Does anyone know if 95 octane would go in a zed, optimax is better i know but has anyone tried this stuff?

They've already released the 100 octane,

Not supposed to be good for our cars though.
Stick with optimax, Tis the best by far IMO :thumbsup::thumbsup:

is that not the "SHELL ... EXTREME " .. on which there was thread

    a short while back ??? .. it contains 5% ethanol ...

i run my N/A on 95 octane without any problems ...

    Optimax Extreme

I put a tank of the Optimax Extreme in my zed.
(5% ethanol) Didn't notice any improvements over normal optimax or bp ultimate.

Seemed to make it over fuel if anything and burn a little excess fuel on startup.

I'm guessing if you wanted to run it constantly you would have to get your car tuned for it?

    Exactly

All the extra octane does is make the combustion temps lower and prevent detonation. That means able to run more boost and agressive timing which does make you go faster. Without these changes I would guess maybe a slight drop in performance.

Im interested what component is harmed from the ethenol? If my sard injectors can run it I think it would be handy to have a fuel map for 100 octane.

    Re: Exactly

Ever since bypassing my faulty DET sensor with a resistor, my car pings on anything less than Optimax Extreme.

Hope its not doing anything bad to my engine!

The concern with running ethanol in our cars, the pre series 2 zeds have a constant positive to the injectors and a negative trigger. Even when the key is turned off the positive charge is still there and causes an elctrolysis type reaction with the injector internals. This info came from a thread on TT.net some months ago. Aparently when the injectors where changed in the series 2 Zeds to the popett style, they also changed to a positive (+ve) trigger so the electroysis does not occur when shutdown. I'm not sure but I think the new style injectors are resistant to an ethanol related corrosion.

Yes, I've heard this too... an enterprising fellow member

wants to use one of my zids to 'immobilise' the fuel injector +'ive circuit (therefore cutting power when ign off) to prevent the problem with ethanol...

Not a bad idea I thought. Alternatively, you could just rewire that circuit to ign instead of 12v constant...

    ummm yeah... pinging is bad....

95 is the highest we get in Tas!

Works fine in my car. No pinging, but then I'm only running slightly more than stock boost.

i use to be in the petrol game...

    hey, just my opinions....
And yes there was a difference when dyno'ed (previosu owner showed me charts (he use to own a GTR performance shop in melb))

Mobile 8000 = best petrol for our car. Performance wise and economical wise

Optimax is second best. Hold up well in weather for less ping'ing.

Ultimate unfortunatly (i use to work at BP hence i always USE to fill up so i can bakc it up) is the worse of the 3. Still performs and more economical then the normal unleaded, but ping'ing is very common. Even on a mildy hot day, the car will ping. Noticed that in your ride? Try use optimax or 8000 see if it happens again. Promise it wont ;)

I stopped filling up BP unless i had no choice.

Optimax is for me as im never usually around a mobile ;/

shell optimax has a 21 day life span and the bp has 42 day life span

well i still don't know what the deal is with all this fuel stuff, i no that there have been tested and people will always have an opinion on what the best fuel is, but having said that, i believe that you should all take good care of you car and the fuel you use as they all vary. i currently am still a believer that you should try b4 you buy take your time and do a 3 week test and try every high octane fuel and see what suits your car.

well i have tried all fuels just like most of you and I'm still confused about which is better

shell optimax has a 21 day life span and the bp has 42 day life span, i read that somewhere on the net i could all be crap anyways

    p.s good luck

    cheers alex

Life span of fuel isn't really relevant to me -

    a tankfull last's a week if I'm lucky...

What can anyone tell us about Caltex Vortex? Octane etc? Good cause they accept the fuel vouchers, but I've found Ultimate gives me more miles, which is pretty much the same as Optimax, but generally cheaper (by like 1c/L - guess it depends what servo you use too)...

    Vortex

Vortex is only 95 octane. Synergy, Optimax and Ultimate are all 98 octane. I cant use it as my car is tuned for 98 octane. Its ok on cold days but in the heat, my car will ping a little. So I dont use it.

    Cheers

Vortex sell 98 octane in Sydney. Very good in my car.

I rank the 98 fuels in the following order,

    Caltex Vortex 98
    BP Ultimate
    Mobil Synergy 8000
    Shell Optimax

I place Optimax last because, whenever I have to use it, my car runs very rich and gets sooted-up at the rear end. This doesn't happen with the other three 98 octane fuels(in my car).

no matter which fuel i use

it still spills out of my petrol cap when i turn a hard right

now when i top up, i use the windscreen wiper toy at the servo to clean the paintwork on my rear qtr panel

Don't drive so fast - haha

Try REALLY doing up the filler cap - like making it click to the shit-house... I've found fuel marks down the side of my Z before, but never if I really make sure I do the cap up tight...

Re: Vortex - thanks guys, I had a feeling it was only 95 - it doesn't say on the pumps anywhere.

That mobil stuff I've never seen up this way - but I don't go out of my way to visit Mobil servo's either...

This is actually a known issue with the Soarer crowd. It seems that when putting in the new fuel restrictor as part of compliance, some companies are not doing it very well.

Often they will use a silicone to seal it which can deteriorate with the fuel causing leaks.

There are 2 ways to fix it:

    1. Remove the fuel filler neck from the fuel tank and take it to a REPUTABLE compliance place, They will have a tool to seal the restrictor to the neck by flaring it from the inside - this is best)

    2. Remove the restrictor from the neck (easier), and then reseal it with Some radiator/exhaust hole patcher which is like a putty - should make sure its not damaged by petrol though.
