SOS from Sydney, Zed Tranmission Expert Needed!!!

I drove my Zed from Brisbane to Sydney (moving here to work) On the drive down I developed some problems in the transmission (auto)

Once the car gets going and has some Km's up its belt (hence it is nice and warm) I get some problems, I can get to about 110-115 kmh, then if i wanna overtake someone and give the car a pit of stick the turbo kicks in to give that exhilerating acceleration, except the the transmisson makes some noise and as the turbo needle picks up the rpm go through the roof, the car surges and shakes and shutters.

It was a hot day when this started, and it only seems to do this when the turbo goes crazy and loads up the transmission and only after the car has gone a decent way (the transmission and engine are nice and warm)

Then engine isnt overheating, its is working like a dream, the turbo is doing as it should, so i believe the transmission has either a rooted torque converter or the band/s is loose or the fluid/filter is dirty and shitty.

The car is not accelerating as fast as it use to from a stand still, however you can go from 0 - 120 relatively quickly.

Can any one suggest a person to look at it in Sydney? do you think i needs an overhaul or a good service?

A good question to all auto drivers:unsure:

1.WHEN DID YOU LAST SERVICE YOUR TRANSMISSION?
2.WHEN DID YOU LAST CHECK TX OIL LEVEL?
    3. HAVE YOU BOUGHT BOV'S OR ANY OTHER SHINY NOISY THING INSTEAD OF SERVICING YOUR TX?

You make a very good point there Baron.

My tranny was serviced by nissan (they change the oil in the torque convertere as well)about 3000k ago, cost $160. And i have an external tranny cooler. Like the tech article says, fitting an external trancooler should be mandatory. Hopefully japan connection only needs to change his fluid and filter.

I am not sure what size cooler is needed for the SAW, but my cooler is

280*180 its a drivetec from repco, if you need a bigger cooler you could always run 2 off these in series, or get a bigger cooler.

Heres a pic(this is just temp install)will make a bracket for it soon.

Are you sure its the trannie? sounds like your dropping spark instead

Do a search on trannies there is a lot here in the archive's. Fit a new "H" type cooler {not a Reed type} and if the problem precists see your mechanic.

    Pretty Sure its the Transmission

I drove from Port Macquarie to Sydney, went pretty much all the way on cruise control to limited the ups and downs on the transmission from accelerating/deccelerating, the transmission had no problems and yesterday was all rainy and cloudy (i was nursing it as much as possible)

When i did give it a bit of stick over taking trucks and caravans the power was there, but as much as it should be, felt down on accelerations and the growl in the transmission when you really let it have it wasnt there.

Drove the car for 5 minutes today up to the shops and back, the acceleration (when the car is cold) is alot better than it was, but the gear changes from 2-3, 3-4 a pretty noticeable and clunky.

I drove the car from Coffs Harbour to Sydney with an ailing transmission (i know im going to hell, its a cardinal sin, couldnt get any country bogans to look at it, they just shit themself with the thought of playing with a 300ZX, got alot of really stupid answers, that equated to piss off) I was doing 100-110 pretty much the whole way, so if its a terminal problem i reckon i should be the side of the road near coffs somewhere.

Anyone recomend a good place to have it looked at in sydney?

Are all Nissan Dealerships born equal under god?

Has anyone found that some nissan dealerships are better than others for service on an imported Zed?

Some dont want to know about them, some have impressive setups to deal with them (my sisters BF use to service 300ZX and Skylines while working for Nissan, now works for Qantas because mechanics pay is lousy) however the one I called up told me to take a walk, not using those words.

Question again, Nissan Service? Equally good? Any good ones in Sydney?

HPI No.54 did a great write up about working over autos

It was done by MV automatics but I can't find a contact address for them anywhere. Maybe give HPI a call and ask them.

    Cheers and good luck
