Has anyone had problems with seized cam bearings on vg30de heads at all. I am building an engine at the moment and one has has a knackered bearing journal and i am looking at machining the journal and fitting plain bearing shells. Theres not much metal around the bearing around the journals, so it may not be possible. Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers

Anything like that is possible if you are prepared to pay for the work

to be done, i.e. the machine work.

I think it is odd for a cam bearing to seize??
It may be cheaper or better to buy another set of heads or another head.

If your car is a TT I have 2 spare heads which I may be selling.

there are no cam bearings. The cams run in the alloy journals in the heads

so if you have a seized cam then it could either be from poor lubrication to the cams and they have worn out the journals or you have a warped head.

It would be easier and cheaper to reco a 2nd hand head rather than what you suggested.

Thanks, but I have some spare heads already and will check them soon. I am hoping that i dont have to junk a good set of heads

    alloy journals

Yeah you have gotta love iron turning in hardened alloy. any missalignment at all is not good. Cam still turned as only the front bearing had gone, where alloy had been removed from the journal to the point where the oil feed hole was blocked. i have had this problem on another engine before mitz 6g72 dohc and had it welded and remachined/align honed. It looked like it might be a bit harder with the vg heads so i was looking for an alternative. Anyways, ill look at some other heads i have
    cheers

    Re: alloy journals

I have the top saddles that bolt over the cams free. If you can resurect the head side of the bearing, you could use these.
