    hi every1

i just signed up to this website hoping i could get sum advice on buiying a 300zx and making certain modifications i wish to possible install onto the car 1 day.

I live in melbourne and i have wanted a 300zx for a years now and i want to get 1 but i cant afford anything ova $10,000. Im afta the 1989 model and up, None Turbo, auto and a 4 seater. Wats a reasonable price for a 300zx of that specs?

Wat i also need advice on is wat problems if any with the 1989 models and up, none turbo auto would most likely occur in used 300zxs, also insurance for the 300zx isnt easy becuz it depended on whether the car was imported or not. I need to know wats the difference between an imported 300zx and a none imported? and how can i tell the difference?

Ok on another note im a DJ and i have been wondering, if i wanted to fit a minimum set of DJ equipment into a 300zx, could it be done? I think its possible with the current equipment size i have but if i wanted to put a towbar to pull a trailer could it b done on a 300ZX?

Thanx for any advice or info any1 could provide 4 me asap

$10,000 could buy you a 300zx of that spec, but expect to pay a little more to get it up to shape. Expect 14,000 or so for a non turbo in really good nick.

They should all be fine depending on how good they have been kept by previous owners. Spend more when your purchase a 300zx and you should have less problems down the track besides general maintenance.

If it's twin turbo, its imported, if its non turbo, you can pretty much expect that it was australian delivered.

I've no idea about the size of dj equipment, but the boot space of a 300zx isn't exactly large.

    Welcome to the forum Adam.......>>

For some good advice on what to look for when buying a Zed check out the Technical section, it will give you a good grounding to work from. $10,000 is going to get you in the door of zed ownership, but you would be better budgeting a little higher then that to get a good relaible example, remember these are 15 year old cars even if they do still look quite new.

With the 2+2 back seat folded down you have a decent amount of storage space, and you can get a towbar to suit it, although I do know of two members who have had them made for 2 seaters.

    Good luck with your search.

We finally have a DJ Zed owner on board!

$10K will get you an NA but expect problems shortly down the track, unfortunately. With second hand cars you get what you pay for.

Get a post 89 model if you can.

Insurance depends on your age, area you live in and of course the company you're gonna sign up with. I'm with Just Cars. An NA is usually cheaper to insure than a TT. And yes insurance companies do look more carefully at grey imports when setting premium.

On Australian delivered Zeds, the rear bumper have two red reflectors on either side of the number plate (approximately). The imports do not. Just look for a compliance plate in the engine bay, if it's an import there "should" be a plate, if not it's an Oz spec car.

I have seen a Jim's mowing franchisee towing his tools in a Z32 and I have also seen a lady with a pets grooming business using a Zed to tow her stuff. So it can be done. :)

Most important I guess is to do your own research and don't buy the first car you see.

    Good luck with it.

    :thumbsup::)

Thanx for every1s help so far

Thank you every1 so far for ur tips and advice on my inquiries, im do intend to spend a massive amount of time researching all possible cars to find the best deal i can.

I have found that in victoria the biggest range of 300zxs is found in the dangeong area and im going there 2day to inspect some 300zxs for myself, but im glad to get some positive points of my dream of using my 300zx as a work car for my DJ company and the system i currently use for my ford LTD will help me to optimise all the space in the entire car for all my equipment.

I still think that 10000 for a 1989 300zx isnt bad for a good conditioned 300zx many of the 1s ill b looking at 2day will b from a dealerships who have the cars all Road Worthy certified and come with the compliance cost in the sale price. www.carpoint.com usually has them posted daily from $9990 - $10000 for 1989 - 1991's i think so their the ones ill look at but if ur all rite i might have to spend extra as u say and thats wat ill do becuz i want my 300zx to last a long time.

Well i checked insurance for the aus 300zx none turbo with just cars which was the cheapest and come out to bout $505 anually for 3rd party fire and theft. So im planning to go with them

Tho 1 of the more adventurious mods i might want to do to my 300zx is becuz of rising fuel prices i might want to convert to gas and have the petrol tank replaced with a gas tank to save space but i think that might b now pushing limits of cost and doability for 300's. but any advice on this plz post for me thanx

Good luck with the gas conversion.......>>

Converting a fuel injected car like the Zed to gas has (to the best of my knowledge) never been done on a marketable basis.

Cheap 300zx offer found need adivce on wat to do

:) ive found a 300zx that is around my price range of $5000 dollars.
I visited a guy selling imported 300zxs 2day and he said he had 2 different cars, 1 was in reasonable condition just needed a few things to get RWC which he said he would provide along with compliance and 12 month rego. all for $9990 ok
The second car was exactly the same car a 1989 none turbo 2+2 seater but the car had front bumper damage and the car had been reprainted by hand:( but becuz of these problems the guy says he would probably sell the car for around $4500. :) thats more my price range.
Wat i need help on is i dunno if that is the price he will offer including RWC, 12month reg and Compliance. So if he doesnt how much doesn complianing a 1989 300zx cost and where exactly do i have to go to get it complianced?

Do u think i could bring the price down if he wont include RWC, rego and compliance cost? how mcuh would a car like that be worth realistic?

I will post more information after i have inspected the car.

    i say this to everyone....

for that price, you're gonna get one nasty zed. No matter how nice it looks, its gonna be nasty. Also, if you cant afford to spend more on a zed, then you cant afford to maintain it. These cars were $80K when new, and although the value of the car has dropped, the price of parts certainly has not. Anyway, something to consider before you become another one of those people who then puts a post up in the for sale section saying "selling zed, cant afford it". Sorry to be blunt, but thats the truth. These cars are not cheap to maintain.

Best of luck with the car hunting and I hope you prove me wrong.

u must think the zed is a vl or something

    reality check.

if you think you can get a zed for anything under 7k on the road and working, and doesnt break down 200 meters down the road, your.. DREAMING!!! yes their are some for around 7k but you will spend money on them to get them working just as good as the more expensive cars, which turn out to be cheaper and hassle free.

    I need help not critism

Hold on fellows im looking into this as thoroughly as i can thats y im offering questions and cing wat ppl think. I havent even inspected the car yet and when i do ill get a list of problems with the engine and stuff and post it here for cost to repair and c if its worth the price i paided for on the car.

Now as ive noticed many of u think $12,000 is the base value of a decent 300zx and i wish i had that amount of cold hard cash to spend but my reality is i only have just ova $4000 and for me the sooner i can get a 300zx the betta.

But i know to myself that im kinda still dreaming with that amount at a zed and from wat i read from the information ive gathered in bout 2 weeks is that ill need to spend alot of money to get the car in top shape. But from where im standing if thats the case then the cheaper i can the the car the betta off i COULD be, meaning that if i need to spend $4000 to get it RoadWorth, reged and complianced then if the car cost me $3000 then ive only spent $7000 on a good working 300zx, In Theroy tho.

From wat the guy was saying there was nothing mechanically wrong with this car, it was the fact there was some front bumper damage and the car had been repainted. So until i actually c the car and inspect it thoroughly u have to admit i might b still getting a good deal out of this cheap car.

Re: I need help not critism

It wasnt criticsm at all. It was a list of things you should ask to satisfy yourself that the car is up to scratch.

The basic point was that it is likely you will have to do a lot of this maintenace stuff if you buy a cheap car. Here is the list.

Just trying to be helpful

dj ..people are trying to help .. but the simple fact of life is that the

seller is not going to tell you the car is a heap of shit ..!!!! and for that price, uncomplied, it will be .. and hand painted ..???

mate, i bought a zed in reasonable condition just under 12 months ago ..since then i have spent over $5000 on repairs and maintenance ..and i could not quantify how much value i have received from forum members in all sorts of ongoing repairs and maintenance ..

if $5000 is what you have now, i would be be keeping that in my pocket and forget about a zed until you are in a position to buy a decent one and to maintain it... otherwise you will simply find that your cheap zed will be sitting in your garage for 95% of it's life, waiting for money to repair it ...!!!!

getting a good deal out of this cheap car

Well if that was the case, and im 99% sure it isant
Id say buy it! but DJ, every ones said how expensive
to repair zeds are, and there not bullshiting you!
The fact is you need more money, i understand you want this car now, no matter what, but what good will it be to you sitting in your yard, cause you cant afford
    to repair it.

I get the point and i than

Ok i get the point im sry if im being hard or unrealistic i dont mean to be, its just u guys r crashing my dreams of owning 1 which i have now wanted for bout 4 yrs and i have only just started looking really. I can say i have leanrt a ton of stuff bout the car from every1 who has given advice and i thank u all for the tips and knowledge. I do take it all in i swear and i probably wont get a zed anytime soon becuz DJing on and off earning bout $4000 dollars a yr roughly and earning bout $80 bucks a week from volleyball reffing isnt going allow me to drive the car daily so when i get a proper job earning bout $600 a week then i know i can handle the car.

thanx again every1 ill still keep looking, theirs a few other zeds in vic i can still look at and who knows by the time ive got a job and plenty of cash zeds might b bout $7000 bucks anyway who knows.

  18. red32

    red32 You talkin' to me?

DJ, if we don't crash your dreams, then a bad Zed certainly will

At your projected budget level, there are not many good zeds around... you might get lucky, so have a look at the car you mention above, but BEWARE.
All we are thinking of is you, your hard-earned cash, and your opinion of Zeds. If you end up with a bad one and no money to fix it, how long do you think your love affair will last. Good luck, and keep trying.

    Maintance Parts Cost List

Ok i understand that maintance is a big issue for 300zxs so really the best thing for me to know now is how mcuh do these parts actually cost? If i had a rough price tade on each part it would allow me to understand and acculate the precise cost of maintance.

So i guess to narrow down the field of parts becuz im sure we dont weant to list every single one, can any list the most commonly replaced parts and list both brand new and second hand (Wreckers) prices on each part and then add the cost of getting a mechanic to do the job if the cost is roughly known.

If any1 could provide a short list for me i would much appreicate it very much

    thanx

Why are you asking for knowledgeable opinions?

It seems to me that you have already arrived at all the answers you want to hear, so go ahead, "do your own thing", and learn the hard way (like most of the rest of us have. )
After all, everyone on here could be wrong, and YOU could be right.
The $70K that I have spent on mine (and there are still things that need to be fixed), could have been used for other purposes, if only you had been available to point me in the right direction.:rolleyes:
