I am looking at buying a new laptop afetr the last got fried in an electrical storm due to a retarded flat mate of mine. Whats the best for running your average programs and stuff like Nissan Datascan etc. Talk in normal human speak:LOL:as I am not the a genius with this shit. MattB
I do believe that the Celeron can do everything you need it to do in an acceptable speed. Most programs such as Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office, media player...etc don't really require a real powerful machine to run. Unless you are running high powered programs (such as graphic intensive based programs - ie games), I will say stick with a celeron and save the cash. If you want a slight performance edge particularly in a multitasking environment get more RAM. Of course if you have the cash and want to play games on your laptop, go Pentium. Hope this helps.
Celeron was the budget one so cheaper But for the things you described the Celeron will be more than enough.
Hiya Matty, I am sure there are plenty of tech heads in this forum but I was under the impression that Pentium Intel Centrino chips are best for laptops because of the power comsumption and wireless stuff  Our centrino driven laptop at work last heaps longer on battery than the older non centrino one. I am sure someon else will either confirm or flame me BTW how are the new seats going? Are the lower, more comfortable etc than the oem ones? cheers Geoff
The new seats are awesome Geoff! They make it fun to get into and out of the car as they hug you so much, but rock to drive in! I mounted them at roughly the same height as the stockies maybe a little lower. You can see at the next cruise if coming, Dec 11th? MattB
definitely go centrino a cheaper centrino based system will have plenty of power and has all the new features of the chipsets that encompass them.
Pentium M in Centrino package would be the go if you have a spare $200 or so, as that's about the price premium for the centrino package over a regular celeron M. Keep in mind, there's a few Pentiums and Celerons in the * Intel mobile package: * Intel® Pentium® M Processor * Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor supporting Hyper-Threading Technology * Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor * Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor-M * Intel® Celeron® M Processor * Mobile Intel® Celeron® Processor Keep in mind, that the centrino package will give you longer battery life and wireless capability and also better performance e.g. 1.7ghz pentium M performs similarly to 2.8GHz Pentium4. So the premium would be worth it depending on your budget. Once again, Pentium M is the CPU of choice. Centrino is a package which includes the processor, intel 855/915 chipset and intel wireless chip. Of course you can save the few hundreds and just go for celeron if battery life and performance dont matter much, you can always buy wireless PCMCIA card later and whatever you do, always get minimum 512MB of RAM, they're cheap enough and worth it.
Re: Pentium M in Centrino package would be the go from my understanding you don't need to have a centrino to have wireless. just about all laptops these days, centrino or not have built in wireless. it was all just an advertising gimick to make it sell better. have no idea about the battery life difference between centrino and plain old pentium M laptops though.
Thanks guys, tooks your advice Adam and spent a bit more! Got a Compaq Presario Intel Centrino 1.8ghz with the 64 bit Turion tech, 512MB RAM and 60GB to start with. Just got to get 5 mins to set it up then I can start playing cant wait. MattB:thumbsup:
I did say you dont need centrino to have wireless and you can buy PCMCIA card later. Of course the power saving itself would be canceled out if you have high powered graphic card and large screen with tru brite technology. Just like the fuel economy in the zed, really.
