I used K&N aerosol "gauze filter oil" but it seems to be A LOT thinner than the stuff that was originally on the Unifilter. Is this stuff ok for foam elements, or do I just need to spray more on?

a tip from my mechanic to pass on...

Only use the spray oil lightly.
My AFM was black from the oil deposited from my pod filter, it is meant to be shiny and clean to work properly, carby spray and a blast from the air line cleaned it up nicely = more accurate reading.

    Thanks for the tip, but...

my real concern is whether I'm using the right oil for foam. The K&N is very thin and slippery - more like the viscosity of WD40 while the original stuff on the Uni was a thick sticky type of oil.

    Anyone know?

you can get the original unifilter oil....

it comes in a big bottle that will last forever because you use so little each time. I normally put a small amount in my hand (about the size of a 20c coin) and then just rub it all in till its oily (wow, this could get so dirty). I have no idea what using a different brand of oil will do the foam filter element. Also, if its too thin, it could get sucked in and cover the wire element in the MAS and affect the readings.

    Cheers

    I've just re-oiled my uni-filter

use the recommended uni-filter oil. called 'filter-fix', it's alot thicker than the sprays. Cost $20 and you can get it at Autobahn. Clean with mineral turps

    Thanks fellas

This oil is thin I think it would get sucked thru the foam. Luckily the zed isnt a daily driver, I reckon I better play it safe and get the proper Unifilter oil.

get the unifilter foam and put a cap full in a plastic bag and then

massage the cleaned filter in the plastic bag. Usually do this for around 15 minutes to give it a consistent coating. I found the unifilter spray on oiling stuff to be the easiest to use and it's really bloody sticky so do it outside on the lawn.

doom .. beware .. that unifilter maintenance article provided by

Zpilot hightlights NOT to use gauze filter oil on a foam type filter .. will cause damage to engine ..!!!!

alternatively, go for a "dry" pod filter such as the "apexi" ...???

Back in the days when my interests had two wheels....

I used a foam unifilter in the CR250 I used to race. As you can imagine with a dirt bike the filter needs cleaning reguarly What I used to do is have a 2 litre ice cream container with the full contents of the unifilter filter fix oil. After cleaning in kerosene, fully imerse the foam element into the oil and pushing down and squeezing the element to make sure it was thoroughly soaked. I then would squeeze (not wring or twist) the excess oil back into the container but with the general rule of "you can't squeeze enough out".

The unifilter kits for the Zed are fairly soaked with oil. I had a slight amount ooze from the base for a good month after intstall, everytime I would clean up the area which it leaked on, guaranteed it would be there again next week.

I realise the dirt bike did not have AFM but when it comes time to reoil mine, I will be doing it the same as I used to.
