I don't drive my car often and use public transport majority of the time. I'd much rather get a hard drive mp3 player and connect it to an amp via 3.5mm jack into rcas then use a normal head unit. Do you guys think this is a good idea or will i get bad sound quality from 3.5mm headphone jacks? I'm getting a good deal on a system so have to decide exactly what i want and buy all at once.

The system i'm thinking of is
    Clarion 4 x 160w apa4320
Clarion front splits (what dimensions should the speakers to be so that its a direct fit?)
Clarion 12inch dual voice coil srw1285

and thats bout it no rear speakers. Not sure if the amp is enough power for the sub when running it as a 3ch amp. The amp is rated at 640w max power output. 320w continuous average power ouput. Sub just saids 750w max power handling.

Also what sort of sub box should i build, i will be pumping a bit of r&b tunes but mainly trance and progressive so relatively slowish long bass beats. Very rarely hardstyle so fast bass beats is not an issue. I like vented but have been told to forget about that and use sealed.

    An idea....

Firstly. I'm not sure about Clarion but can give you an idea for a pioneer setup.

Pioneer have an adapter that can be plugged into most of their h/units that allows you to interface an ipod or Mp3 player.

It allows the ipod/mp3 player to play the muzic through the head unit and out your normal setup.

Pat, I am using an iPod in my car.

I am running an Alpine head unit (CDA-9835) with THIS
The KCA-420i adapter is only about $130-200. Shop around for best price. This setup is by the far the best way to go if you wanna run an iPod. The head unit will operate and display all information from the iPod and the sound quality is far superior to either headphone to RCA or FM transmitter setup.
Alpine have a number of head units that are compatible with this adapter.

    Ive got it too

Really is worth the cost although I got it real cheap as a package with the headunit

a question for you guys using Alpine headunits and the ipod unit....

I have an old alpine unit in my car. It's about seven years old now but it does have Ai-Net. Does this alpine adapter work in older alpine units or only the new ones??... I would love to play the ipod in my car...

    Cheers

It will need to be a current model Alpine head unit

otherwise it won't work. However, I have heard that the previous model Alpine head units do work but with limited functionality.

It's very unlikely your 7 year old unit will work as it's probably several models behind the current one.

In short.... no. Only 2004 + model units will work.
