My Zed is a 5 speed manual with criuse control. I was told that this combo was never made and that my car was an auto converted to manual. Is this true?
How can I tell for sure if my car has had a conversion. Looks stock as a rock to me!

    Egg ....

    ChecK the VIN.

Vehicle Identification Number should tell you if it's a manual or auto ex factory.
Rare but some 5 speeds did get cruise control, I think it was an option.

    I, too, have a 5spd with cruise control >>

but I've checked a couple of times to make sure it was a factory 5sp, which it is. The climate control also seems factory..

I agree with Egg - it was an option, but was rarely taken. :)

Check the wiring looms on passenger side next to relay box

If there are three separate looms/connectors that look like this

    (Disregard the text and arrows)

Then you have a genuine auto to manual conversion

If there are only two looms/connectors, it was a manual from factory..

PS: The cruise control is a highly complex setup and is very unlikely that the average zedder would have installed it themselves so it's prob ex-factory...

mine too is a 5speed manuel with a factory cruise control

althought i'm not sure if it works as i've never bothered to switch on the cruise control. however mine is a stock aus spec model and both the gearbox and criuse control unit are factory from the factory so i'd say it was most likely a factory option.

To check if car was originally an auto ....

In the pic below, there are 2 plugs. An auto has 3 plugs in this location. Therefore, unless the car in this photo has had its wiring loom replaced, which is highly unlikely, this car has always been a manual.

btw, I don't know what the 3rd plug is for.

    cheers,

    Peter

my car is a now manual, but was born an auto....

I discovered it was an auto in the following way:

    1) Had cruise control (made me suspicious)
    2) I found the A/T controller

The A/T controller is an extra computer that sits next to the ecu in the passenger footwell. Manual cars obviously have no need for this computer, and mine was left there after the conversion

    3) I have the A/T warning lights

On the lower right hand side of the instrument cluster are the warning lights for the auto. In a manual, this strip is just grey. In my car, if I shine a torch on them, I can see the three warning indicators (Hold, power...... and cant remember the 3rd).

    4) I got Simon from TTZ and EnuffZ to check my vin number. My car began life as an auto, made in august 1990.

Other things I have later found.... in a manual, just behind the driver side head light is the clutch bleed thingy. My car does not have this. Bugger if I know how my mechanic bleeds my clutch...

    Cheers

    I think you'll find....

the three warning lights your talking about are power, hold and over drive.
