Possible vacuum leak.

My Zed usually idles smoothly and pulls well. At the moment, when started from cold, the engine has a shake but I know it is not an electrical problem like a plug. I suspect a vacuum leak somewhere. The idle is now flucuating from around 600 to 1200 rpm. It has always used heaps of fuel, so I also suspect it is in safe boost mode. When it warms up, alot of the "shake" is gone and it starts to behave. It also has a flat spot off idle when it's cold. Neve had it before. So I'm asking - where do you look for leaks AND how do you reset from safe mode.

    Look at the TPS connector

start the car, and while its idleing like you say,
wiggle the tps connector, if your idle settles down
straight away, its proberly a dirty connection,
    just clean it up.

Can you make it down to the tech day on the 24th? It's a bit of a drive I know, but not much further than those coming from the GC.

    See Ya,

    Qld Tech Day

Yep. I'm comin' down (from Maryborough) as long as the car behaves.
It's always been heavy on fuel (like 250km from 66 litres) so I'm suspecting some sensors are shagged. I've got an R33 Skyline as well and it's far simpler and easier to work on. This is a real learning curve. Thanks for the info. See you on 24th. Thanks for the invite.

    250k's to a tank! .... SH*T!

Sounds like O2's, possibly det sensor too.

Have you done any diagnostics? Might pay to do so b4 coming down to the TD, in case parts are required.

Self-diagnostics (without ConZult or Datascan) can be done via the ECU. Do you need instructions or LINK to a relevant Tech Article?

Also try tightening all fuel line clamps.

    ECU diagnostic proceedure.

Easier with ConZult or DataScan but it'll get you started.

Read thru the Tech Section too, you'll learn heaps. :p

    See ya at BurpinGarry's on 24th. :D

See a few posts below ... perhaps you could travel down to the tech day together? Safer that way incase one breaks down...

    Re: 250K to the tank

Thanks K-Zed. I'll spend Sunday on the Zed. I've read through the tech section before - but thanks for the link.
I'm thinking O2s and temp sensors for starters - I know the NTKs are around $140 - how much is a temp sensor?
If I can get one from Nissan I might just fit it anyway.

    Cheers Neil

    The senders are pretty cheap.....>>

TTZ sell them for $48, (Click Here) so your local Nissan dealer shouldn't be too much more.

Coolant Temp Sensor from TTZed is

    $48,

edit: SHIT, While I was typing this 'novel', Wykked beat me to the TTZED price!!!

but prob same at Repco ... I have a working spare which you could borrow while you're waiting for the new one...

Let me know... can COD it Monday'ish.

Put a multimeter on yours ... the approx values you are looking for are

    2.1-2.9 kOhm at 20C (68F)
    0.68-1.0 kOhm at 50C (122F)
    0.30-0.33 kOhm at 80C (176F)

If it checks out, then either clean or just replace the 2 electrical connectors pins inside the plug using this guide ... A favourite job of mine. I have a stash of the connectors I can post free in an envelope ... or we can do at the tech day (takes bout 15 mins)

    Re: coolant sensor

Thanks Z4life. That's a kind offer. I'm working on the Z all day Sunday. I'll check the sensor connectors and clean everything up and see if it makes a difference.
    I've got a multimeter - I'll give that a try as well.

    Cheers
