POWER STEERING PROBLEM

Discussion in 'Technical' started by robertmiles33, Sep 20, 2004.

  1. G'day guys, just got a quick question to ask...

I got a NA Zed and its been recently having a couple of problems with its power steering. At times it just cuts out - so you're totally F#@!ed if you are taking a corner at high speeds. It is totally smooth with the steering working, but as soon as it cuts out it get real stiff and hard to turn.
At first I thought this might've been a problem with the power steering hose. So I got that replaced. And also refilled it with new fluid.
And it is still playing up. I just thought that I might post a topic here before I take it again to a mechanic and get totally screwed with a rediculasly high price.
Any help would be great guys.

    Cheers,
    Rob.

Z32 power steering has a 'fail safe' mode

which might be what you're experiencing. Do a search on Power steering, fail safe mode, and ST-31 - this is the page number in the service manual that describes fail safe mode, and what inputs affect it.

    Good luck. :)

Does your speedo have problems at the same time?

If so, it's the speedo causing the problem.

As IB stated, it could >>

be that the speedo flickers on & off when this happens.
If so, before you take the instrument cluster apart,
check the Earth Strap from your Speed Sensor to the chassis cross member, behind the gearbox.
I had the same problem, not long ago, & after taking the cluster out several times & changing various diodes etc, it turned out to be as simple as a bad earth from the sensor to the chassis.
Hope that it all works out for you.
    Cheers

Check your belt tension...if it is loose and slipping it will

lose pressure under load and the the steering will get heavier because it doesnt have enough hydraulic pressure to move the actuator.

    problem with that

I 've got the same problem as you .. i think its the problem with 'power pump slot' something like that Silvias S 13 has the same problem as zed .... i think its the result of massive 'overspeed' conering

    Fail Safe Mode

I think there's something in this Fail Safe Mode. The online manual says something like:

When a vehicle speed signal is not entered into the power steering control unit for approximately 10 seconds during normal operation, a fail safe system activates to maintain a steering effort at a level similar to that experienced during high-speed operation... When this happens, a symptom referred to as "heavy steering during stationary turns" sometimes occurs.

I've noticed that my steering either works perfectly (you can turn the steering wheel with your finger), or it is very hard to turn (like my old 260z). Kinda like an on/off state that you'd expect from an electrical problem, rather than a mechanical one.

Then again, my speedo seems fine, so I'm not sure if it's the speedo sensor that's failing.

Hmmmm... but I'm no mechanic or auto-electrician... just thinking out loud...

Problem seems to be the Electronic Control Assembly for the Power Steering

I tracked down my problem to a little metal box under the passengers feet (behind the big metal box). If I wiggled the plug the steering would either go heavy or light (the fail safe was cutting in and out - which I found out about after reading the online manual).

I opened up this little box and it seems that if I flex the circuit board, I can also make it switch in and out of hard/easy. For the life of me I couldn't see any dry solder joints - which would have been nice and easy to fix.

I spoke to Nissan and the genuine replacement part for this tiny litte circuit board is a huge $1636.35!

Does anyone have a spare one of these just lying around? ;)

    I've tracked mine down!

Mine is also the power steering control unit under the passenger's feet. Only problem is, cause mine is a Auspec (non-Hicas) I can't find a replacement part. Any ideas? I've spent close to $1k tracking down the problem and now that I've found it, can't find that part......very frustrating!

    Problem Sorted!

I got my new electronic module the next day from John at Cresta (thanks for the advice) for $50, which is a saving of just over $1500 on a brand new part from Nissan.

Installed it this morning and my power steering has never felt so good. I'll have to re-learn how to drive my car now. ;)

Thanks again Candu for your good advice.

    Cheers
