Hi all, I just need some advice on where to start looking for a replacement starter motor for my 93 TT. Lately, on morning starts, and occasionally throughout the day my starter motor makes the sound of when you try to restart the car while its still running. Its progressively getting worse so I need to get a new replacement asap. Can someone who has the experience with replacing the starter motor with a re-manufactured one point me in the right direction please. Currently I'm considering the CZP unit https://conceptzperformance.com/cir...lacement-starter-nissan-300zx-z32_p_23241.php Thanks in advance.
A local option is http://www.rgsperformance.com/produ...-motor-for-nissan-z32-300zx-twin-turbo-or-na/ A mate has been using one for about 18 months. Apparently it sounds different but seems to work fine.
Before buying a new starter motor check that the bolts that secure it are not loose, stripped or missing. Cheers Dave
Based on your description of the problem, I reckon Instamatic's suggestion would be the place to start. You'll probably find nothing wrong with the starter motor, however you'll have to remove it in any case to check the ring gear. When you've got the starter off, put the transmission in neutral & rotate the ring gear 360 degrees with a large flat bladed screwdriver & visually inspect all the teeth for wear. Maybe mark one of the teeth with a paint marking pen so you know when you've completed a full rotation. If there's a problem you'll see it. It's a transmission out job to replace the ring gear.
Unfortunaley the starter motor gear is a lot harder than the ring gear so it suffers the wear. You need to remove the flywheel (flex plate on an auto) and either have a new ring gear fitted or replace the flywheel. Yell out if you need a hand some time. In the meantime if your car wont start because the starter wont engage properly just put in gear and rock it a bit so you move the ring gear round a bit.
