Potential early model Forum Z project

Discussion in 'Non Technical' started by slicktop_beast, Oct 31, 2015.

  1. Testing the waters here, but would there be any members here willing to participate in a group build? Seen a few 260 and 280 shells just within the bounds of an achievable restoration. It is completely understood that the majority of members would most likely prefer to finish their own ongoing Z project, but with the number of shells being scrapped, perhaps it would be a good idea to do a forum build...Obviously there are a multitude of details to be sorted. Saving one of these cars from certain death is incentive enough. Potential sale of the vehicle to fund future forum endeavours perhaps? Charity events and cruises...could be the flagship for this forum. Is something like this within the realm of reality? Or is one simply too eager to resurrect the dead?

I think this is a neat idea for sure! A few things to think about though, such as who is going to pay for the parts up front? But I love the ideas of saving Z's :zlove: I wish I could help you but other than helping you find some parts I think you all are a little out of my realm... Good luck though!

  3. Create a forum fund for donations for a shell and parts etc... Best that moderators be left in charge of something like that (if open to such an idea). Would definitely need a small committee to oversee all expenditure. It would be the most financially viable method of restoring an older car like the 240z. I'm sure there is the possibility of some workshop sponsorship, especially if the car is subject to some track day's/charity/car event etc.

Not something we'd be involved in.

If members want to get together in a syndicate that's up to them but it would be a private arrangement between those parties -nothing to do with or endorsed by the forum or moderators.

  5. Probably best that way.

Sounds like a great project. But as pointed out really needs to be a small group of close knit folk happy to work with each other

A mate and I are building a Mk1 Golf Track car, and we bitch at each other for $$$ parts all the time, not to mention other issues about not fitting a part properly etc which has happened a few times on both our parts..:bash:

We have been pretty close mates for years, I can only imagine any issues with this sort of thing by guys meeting online and putting $$$ into it.

If you go for it good luck, look forward to the build thread. :br:

I had a moderately modified 260z 2+2 many years ago(loved it to death)but it has little, or no, relevance on a 300ZX Forum(other than curiosity value)IMHO.

It would be good fun to build, though.:zlove::br:

I'd agree. There are very good "Datsun Z" clubs out there.

Equally there are very good 350/370 clubs out there.

Just to give you something else to think about....and not usually my area of interest at all, but there is a recent trend which I think may be growing.....

....classic car bodies, with Electric engines replacing the tired old original motors.

Personally I used to think this as heresy.....

    But think about it......

Even in another thread it's come up YET AGAIN that some nice old cars (Z32 included) are simply not worth maintaining.

    So why fight the tide?

Maybe the ONLY way some of these classic cars will survive into the future (260/280 etc included) is if they change with the times.

A nice torquey easy to maintain, very few moving parts "electric conversion" may well be the way of the future.

It's been done before to the classic Datto's but mostly a good 10+ years ago.

Time has moved on and the technology has changed HEAPS in that time. Charge times have come down. Driving range has increased.

I hate to say it but....it's food for thought.

  10. Definitely agree regarding the electric motor scenario. Watched an awesome drag race between one of the new tesla sedans vs a hsv 427. Incredible the way it pulled off the line. Absolutely no lag waiting. The power it generates almost equates to 500kw. Plus awd. Would make for one mean wrecking ball, that kind of tech in a chassis as light as the 240z.

    Ummm

If you consider for a moment freight train locomotives, the reason they are diesel electric and not merely diesels is of course the instant torque electric drive systems give, it's strange that it's taken so long for electric cars to arrive they are in ther infancy also which is scary so start stock piling your petroleum now for the day where it's no longer available will arrive in most our life times

  12. From what i read not long ago, the electric car was invented before the internal combustion powered car, but was not cost effective in those times. I suspect big oil played a part in it's demise. An early electric-powered two-wheel cycle was put on display at the 1867 World Exposition in Paris by the Austrian inventor Franz Kravogl, but it was regarded as a curiosity and could not drive reliably in the street. Last part from wikipedia.

I think this is kind of what you are saying. Although this is quite beefed up. Its an all independent electric Mustang. Not only is it cool that its completely electric, its also blow your pants off fast.

I agree its a strange sight but, hey its neat.

Could be a cool build if you know the right people and have time for electric stress IMHO.

The recent big shale oil find in South Australia should keep us going for a while yet :D
