300zx variable power steering

Hi, was just wondering whether it is possible to change the variable power steering so it is always light?

 

Im pretty certain you can just disconnect the pressure relief valve down on the steering rack.
it will either go heavy all the time or full light depending on the operation of the valve. I cant remember its operation but it will soon become apparent.

I gotta ask why tho M8?? At speed, when there is little assistance anyway, the wheel is light anyway.

Apart from probably being against Road Safety Regs in various States, I would venture to say that it IS NOT a feature which any thinking Driver would want.

There is a reason why Power Assistance is progressively reduced as road speed increases,
It is directly because it takes much less Steering Input to alter direction as speed increases, therefor, to get maximum assistance when traveling at high speed, would be extremely dangerous to ALL road users, to the point of being potentially fatal if excess steering input was applied unintentionally(such as sneezing/coughing involuntarily or hitting a small pothole or uneven road surface).

I had a problem with the electrical connection to the pressure relief valve and drove for a couple of weeks or so with the steering stuck on light all the time. I was amazed at how much more nimble the car felt (and was). I was also alarmed at how easy it would be to put it into a wall. Scarily easy. I got used to it after a while but you really had to keep your wits about you; a moments inattention at speed and your toast. Really makes me appreciate the way the steering firms up with speed. I would not go back to the light all the time steering, too risky.

 

Ive disconnected it already. Goes hard and stays hard haha.

Reasons. Because Its my Drift car, and i cant Have Variable steering and it wrecks my lines as the speeds constantly change. Hence why i have it dissconnected for a long time.

Now though ive retro fitted some r33 knuckles which have shorter ackerman arms resulting in a much heavier steering. So I was in hope that I could make it constantly light. Fighting the steering mid Scandos is a mission haha

Its for a dedicated track car for Drifting purposes with modified knuckles so the steering is alot harder than standard. Read my other comment below.

 

This is how I want my car to drive haha. Its for drifting and light and nimble steering response is what I need haha

 

U could go with an electric power steering unit, would be much more consistent and gets rid of a whole lot of ugly leak prone power steering hoses, and free some space down the left side of the engine for airflow.

 

At this stage I want to keep it somewhat stock (power steering wise etc) as it is still registered so I can drive it to and from track etc.

 

Ahhh KK, if thats the case, Im guessing youll need mebbe to disable the speed sensor input to the PS ECU
Make it think its stationary.
Im just not boned up on the full operation of it.

Yeah I had a feeling that its all just triggered off the speed sensor, triggering the blah blah blah haha.

Do you know where the powering steering ECU is located in the car? I havnt looked far into it yet either, Just thought that someone else out their has done it already.

Not sure if the solenoid is 12v or 5v but you could always just make up another signal wire with a switch in the cabin if you still drive the car to the track.

 

Chili can be pretty hard on people yes but it f you check times of posts his response is prior to your comment on the car being a drift car with r33 knuckles

 

For track use I agree with heavy steering not variable light to heavy cycles. For road use I have to agree with the old fellow Chili.:agree:
