Hey guys just purchased my first 300zx, noob question but I have been trying to figure out the Climate control. I cant seem to be able to get the fan to come on without the aircon being switched on, just pressing fan high or low with the aircon switched off does nothing. probably something simple im not doing.

    Thanks in advance.

Yep in the series 1 climate control you can not turn the fan on without the air con. Annoying at times, and probably why they changed it in the Series 2 climate control. In series 2, you can control direction of fan, more fan speeds and also turn it on without the air con.

Yea that makes sense now mines a 1990 so i'd imagine its series 1, it was starting to do my head in. Is it possible to retro fit a series 2 into a series 1? or is that just opening a can of worms?

Yes you can no worries at all , you have to get you hands on a Series 2 Climate control pod & ecu { you've just missed out on one set in the for sales it was a good price too } and change them over the pods real easy and the computer will have you under the dash on the driver's side facing the trans hump and a bit of swearing , but all good .

If u dont want aircon on u need to press the eco button which is the fan on without aircon.

Series 2 conversion isnt hard u just need to get your hands on a series 2 control pod and a series 2 amp module (ecu) and thats it.

    One more thing...

Its a minor thing, but sometimes it bugs me. The series 2 climate control does not display the ambient temperature like the series 1. That sometimes bugs me as I like to know how hot or cold it is outside. 1st world problems I know, but if thats important to you, you will lose the ambient temp display going to Series 2.

Im pretty sure the temp sensor is on the dash center vent panel to the left habd side si its not outside temp its inside temp.

Isn't there a temp sensor in the front of the Z near the front bar as well? :zlove:

    Yep - no air-con - no fan.

If you turn the a/c fan on and set the ambient temperature to the actual temperature level (or above) and then select "ECON" the compressor will remain active but will stop compressing. In effect it is switching into idle until it is needed to compress again (when the ambient needs the actual temp to come down by setting accordingly)

In simple terms - turning ECON on means it will only start the compressor when its cooling only.

This is the closest you can get to the fan on, with air-con off.

Or you just make bypass switch on compress power (+) wire.
Remote relay control form the cabin (you don't have to run heavy gauge wires in the cabin this way.)

Your fan still will work ... and as there is no + wire on the compressor, AC or compressor simply wont turn on.

    Cheers

Ah yes your right i think that is a temp sensor. Forgot about that one.

    sensors..

The sensor in the front bar, is for ambient temp. Thats what is displayed on the series 1 climate control. The small round sensor in the top corner of the dash is a "sun" sensor. It works with the other sensors to adjust your climate conditions within the cabin.

That image is of a LHD series 2 air conditioning system.

How did you cook up that story, it's completely wrong. In Econ mode the A/C compressor clutch is disengaged no matter how hot it gets. The compressor doesn't spin and there's no cooling effect. If the interior temp gets higher than the set temp, all the climate control does is increase fan speed.

What you're describing is how the climate control operates when set to Auto, not Econ. The compressor clutch only engages when it needs to chill the cabin, and the computer decides when that is. It's not constantly compressing when in Auto.

    That's series 2?
Invert the controls to RHD and that's what my system is.
    Thought I had series 1...
I thought display on series 2 was different?

Yep - thanks for picking up my bad - obviously a while since I looked at the manual on this with mixing up the econ with auto

Surprised myself though to find out that econ is fan only all the time though - so I guess it is possible sort of

    Yes, you are correct

The Series I display is different to the Series II. ;)
The Series I displays the outside ambient temperature & as you can see in the pic, there is no ambient temperature displayed or any provision for it to be displayed. ;)
If your control pod is a mirror image of the pic, congratulations, you have a Series II unit.
