Weird clicking/crunching sound, and whistling sound

Have noticed my car makes this really weird clicking/crunching sound when pressing and releasing the brake pedal when stopped, and also when braking and are almost at a complete stop....... seems like it's coming from the front driver's side wheel. When we got the blue slip (car was passed) we were told the pads were a bit low and would need replacing soon. I have just ordered a set from GSL Rallysport. Could it be the brake pads or something else entirely? Also get a shit load of brake dust on this wheel only.

Also, there's a weird whistling sound, on the passenger side, possibly from the front wheel.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

    I have the same issue.

I suspect I might have put one of the plates on the brake pads wrong somehow. Or there is another small corner plate which might be causing my noise.

I had tons of brake dust on my front wheels with new pads. Changed to ceramics and my front rims stay clean as a whistle. I was just eating through organic pads.

You are probably on the wear indicators.

What you're describing is pretty common for our front brakes, if the pads and rotors are good...
Remove all the pads, clean/re-surface, clean the pins and the shims!! (very important) apply brake sealant (anti squeal) lube the pins slightly, can almost guarantee it'll fix it
    it

Will happen if you do a wheel bearing for example as it upsets the callipers. Give that a shot cos it'll cost you ten bucks to do it yourself.

Its hard to interpret sounds at the best of times, but it sounds like its brake pad and shim related based on clicking and crunching

Sounds like pads might be worn, inspect them and change as required

Might pay to get a master brake cylinder brace bar as well, based on the word "crunching"
Get someone to put their foot on the pedal and watch the flex on the master cylinder !

Nissan clearly under designed this part of the Z, I'm surprised the master cylinder doesn't snap off the firewall after seeing the amount of flex myself (someone operating the foot brake).

Video's relay the meaning of sounds well - if you don't go well in the "find the z problem" stakes - post a video and link and it won't take long then.

    Here's a suggestion.....

Jack the car up, remove the front wheels & have a look! :rolleyes2:

Rob's suggestion concerning the wear indicators would be the first thing to check. ;)

If the pads are worn out, then the rotors may require replacement or machining as well. :(

While your doing this, flush & change the brake fluid. :zlove:

If the sound is brake squeal, then it will be related to the brake pad shims, or they may even be missing, so if there aren't any shims between the brake pads & calipers, make sure you get some. ;)

Hi guys, changed the pads today. Old pads were down to wear indicators on one side, other side a bit better but not much. Old pads were Nissan so I'm assuming they were still the original ones :( Rotors were ok...... we cleaned the pins and shims. No more whistling and no more clicking/crunching :D

Thanks again for all the help and advice! :)

That great news - nothing worse than an annoying noise while you drive
