Hey guys, some of you may recall many months ago I posted about the starter motor grinding on the flex plate. Over the weekend a few friends replaced it, so there's a new one on the car now. However I am still having minor problems and have identified what I think is what caused the problem in the first place. The gear on the starter motor looks slightly worn, maybe 1-3mm off each tooth but one has about 4mm and is noticeably rougher than the rest. When I start the car, I can hear as if the gear is on the starter is spinning and then misses the flex plate so it sounds like it's skimming the flex plate for a fraction of a second and then engages. It only does this rarely, so I am assuming it is that tooth missing and it taking chunks with it. Now I have a few questions, how tough is the flex plate and how soon will I mess it up if I only happens once every couple of days? Secondly, can I buy just the gear of the starter motor, are there any other cars I can source it from that have the same dimensions and teeth that I can use? And where would I buy one from?

Doing my head the amount of time I've spent on this problem :bash: But I still love her :zlove:

Obviously the gear should've been replaced when you had it out of the vehicle.

This would be an accurate assessment.

The amount of wear to the ring gear will be directly proportional to the number of times you start the car.

Secondly, can I buy just the gear of the starter motor,
    Yes.

are there any other cars I can source it from that have the same dimensions and teeth that I can use?
Numerous Z's being parted out, perhaps someone wrecking a Z could sell you a used starter motor that's in good condition.

And where would I buy one from?
Try posting on this forum in the WANTED Section, or reply to advertisers in the PARTS FOR SALE Section.

If you have a new ring gear fitted.....

don't use your shoddy starter motor. Replace it with a decent one (advertise for one in Wanted section). If you continue to use the starter with the buggered throwout gear, you will chew out your new ring gear

Given the choice between replacing a starter motor or a ring gear, I know which one I'd rather be doing :bash:

    Thanks guys.

Will throw up a wanted post. What's the actual part called by Nissan? The gear on the starter. Would it be worth while going down to a Nissan dealer and asking them for a price on it? I can't imagine it being expensive and I'd be able to replace it myself.

Why don't you buy the entire starter motor from a car that is being parted out. You obviously know what a good starter motor looks like now. (Well you know what good throw out gear teeth look like)
You will be able to have lots of fun dismantling your old starter motor to show us all how to ..... :)

Going whichever way is cheaper :D

If it's cheaper to buy another one I will.

    Your priority....

...should be quality/condition rather than price.
How many times do you want to change the starter?
    Do you want reliability?
Chances are you can buy a used complete starter motor cheaper than a brand new gear.

It doesn't mean I'm going to find the cheapest nastiest thing out there, just whatever route is cheaper for a proper quality fix I'm going to choose. I have university text books to pay for and only work part time, so I need to be wise with my money. But yes so far what I've found is just buy a complete starter motor and tear it apart, thank you for the help :).
