engine cleaner

  1. just wondering what and if people on here have used engine cleaners like seafoam etc? and if so, what are your opinions on them? r33k had a nice article about using atf fluid and enough water to steam clean but not hydrolock the engine, not confident enough trying that method tho. i have read things about engine cleaners messing with the injectors and stuff?

I've had similar thoughts over the years re the seafoam, never been game to try it myself.

I've been running Premium E10 in my racecars for the past few years and I must say the ethanol content sure seems to clean things through also.

  3. i have bugger all idea when it comes to fuels.... do i have to do anything major to fuel lines etc? i had an odd experience just now pulling into my street, i live in a cul de sac and as i was doing a u-turn the car all of a sudden conked out, back into park and it started right away no trouble. didnt boost it hard or anything on my 5 minute drive home so i dont know. doing a s2 ptu swap and new coil pack connectors/plugs, fuel filter and oil change next week. auto service about to be done also. just needs tlc i guess, as do all things so precious.

I once used ATF down the brake booster hose of the plenum to track down an exhaust leak. Killed the RHS o2 sensor shortly after.

Do an Italian tune up, no substitute IMO :br:

Apparently Subaru sell a product that is the same as Sea Foam.

I dunno, to me pouring sea foam into my engine is akin to colonic cleansing, I understand the claimed health benefits, but I'll be stuffed if I'm gonna stick a hose up there lol.

Used the subaru upper engine cleaner before. Doesn't foam up like seafoam and didn't appear to make any difference. That said there wasn't really a related problem there to begin with.

  8. 5:22 am and now there is coffee on my keyboard :D ahhh it probably isnt even that bad im just being too overly cautious

  9. so a non fix for a non problem? yeah i pretty much wont be buying it. ive used engine cleaners in a few 4 bangers and its always made me uneasy when it starts choking a bit

You should be able to get this http://www.liqui-moly.com.au/products/petrol-engine-intake-decarb-2733/ at your local Repco or similar.

Nulon make one too http://www.nulon.com.au/products/Aerosols/Foaming_Air_Intake_Cleaner/#.VMQH1dLLfYg and have some useful videos for application on their website.

I've read great things about seafoam but never used it myself.

I regularly use these things on my "daily driver" cars, and there's no reason that you shouldn't use them on your 300zx. Your cylinder heads are probably full of carbon by this stage of the game, cleaning them out can only be a good thing.

Re your query on using ethanol based fuels; no you shouldn't on a series 1 motor.

  11. cheers rob wont be trying anything other than 98. ive also read a lot of great things, but there are always a few naysayers. watched a video with a guy claiming its merely condensation coming from the exhaust, but then im pretty sure seafoam is petroleum based and not water based. after using something like these cleaners is it a safe bet to maybe change the oil and filter (need to anyways)?

Yeah you definitely need to change oil and filter after using it.

And sorry for the coffee :p

Why? You're not adding it to the oil system

  14. haha all good might do it after a spark plug change so it burns off a bit better.

Sure, but you're going to get some of it past the rings. Pretty sure the instructions tell you to do an oil change. Every where I've read about it suggests to.

  16. yeah definitely going to do one. service sticker says it was due 20,000 ago but oil is clean atm so im assuming the previous owner just got to doing the last few himself.
