G'day. I'm after some advice on fixing my H pipe problem. Apologies if it's been covered before, but I did a search and couldn't quite hit what I'm after.

I've got a Z32 2+2 TT with an 'aftermarket' cat back. I have no idea what it is, and I don't think it's anything particularly special.

The H pipe has resonators, and the resonators have corroded and one of the pipes is starting to tear out of the resonator wall. This needs replacing!

The question I have is whether the H-pipe/X-pipe unit is the same regardless of exhaust system brand and/or aspiration and seating. Can I just buy any H-pipe unit online and expect it to fit?

I noticed a suggestion somewhere else to just get an exhaust place to fab up a H-unit. I assume in this case it'd be just pipes without a resonator? Or could they do up a resonator as well? What would be the primary benefits of with/without?

For reference, the car's a pretty cheap, ratty example that I'm probably moving on shortly (with a view to buying a much better condition Z when I can house it properly. I do love the car).

Thanks for making it through the 100 questions.

Sometimes the center sections are interchangeable, sometimes not. Most go close.

When I bought my Zed it had no H pipe. It smoked like arse and putting in a H pipe stopped it. Why am I telling you this ?. Well the fix was cheap. The exhaust place just welded a small piece of pipe between the two exhaust pipes. So in short get the exhaust place to remove what you have now and put pipes straight thru then blow a couple of holes in the sides facing each other and weld in a H pipe. Problem solved cheaply and it works.
    Good Luck

As above it sounds like your best bet is just to fix Whatcha got. A replacement resonator should be cheaper than an aftermarket muffler and the cost of fabricating it in.

    Thanks for the advice, guys.

Patch up of what I have looks no go because of how badly rusted it is, but sounds like an exhaust place can knock something up without too much hassle. More research shows resonators aren't that complex anyway, so they can probably make these as well for not much.

Slightly offtopic but has anyone bothered to do an X pipe style exhaust like most modern v8's instead of the H pipe? I assume the H pipe is a balancing pipe to ensure the car doesnt sound like some kind of mang v6 commodore but I wonder if it would improve both sound and flow or the the convergent turbulent flows would negate the exercise.

I'm taking it to Andy's Exhaust Werx (based on reccomendations all over the place, and because he's not far from me). He should be able to knock something up without too much fuss. I'll probably get him to make up an X-pipe and wrap it all in a big resonator like that UAS unit.

Can give an idea of price when he's had a look.

Surprised that you seem to be going for an expensive option compared to a simple H of pipe. Let the muffler guy suggest the most cost effective option, you say you are trading up so it would be better to hold onto the extra cash for the next Zed.
