Brake rotor recommendations

    As per the thread title, after 9 years and 90,000 kays I'm in need of new rotors - the slotted brembos I had on there are no longer slotted :eek:.

    I'm not after cheap or race spec, but something good in that middle range for street / semi regular spirited runs.

    A while back I was all set up to get DBA 4000 Series Slotted from GSLRallySport with Bendix Ultimate pads (yes I know they are dusty - have used them for years and am happy with the performance) but got distracted, probably by a shiny object.

    Are these a good thing or should I look at alternatives?
    And where is the best place to get them from? (secondary question is GSL still in operation)

    Col i would recommend getting dba rotors with hpx pads. The hpx pads are meant to be the same as the bendix ultimates, but less dusty. I recently was in contact with Brakes Direct who sell both the rotors & pads so maybe try them if GSL isnt around. I ended up getting the dba t3 4000 series front & rear rotors for my akebono calipers from another source for a lot less so always have a good look elsewhere aswell. Ill most likely end up getting the hpx pads through Brakes Direct once my calipers get delivered.

    DBA4000 are a waste of money. They are not good enough for serious track work and no better than standard DBA slotted for the street.

    If you want a good quality rotor, get a set of Brembo Sport Slotted from the US. Nothing we have in this country at this level gets close.

    Col does not track his car.

    IMO DBA slotted are fine for street use. Not going to break the bank either and easily accessible. Support Aussie stuff too.

    Probably more than I'm looking to spend, but thanks for the suggestion should powerball ever come in. And yeah, use is just street / occasional twisty driving.

    Except that one time at Sandown...:br:

    Any other suggestions for where to get brake stuff?

    Col if you can figure out the correct part numbers for the rotors, then just type it into google or even ebay & you can compare different prices from the results, thats how i came across the rotors for my akebono calipers. just make sure to confirm with the seller if the rotors are genuine dba & also check for yourself as ive heard that there are fake dba branded rotors. I never looked into replacement rotors for the stock calipers so i cant help with that, sorry.

    I haven't bought rotors from GSL but have started buying my pads from them for a range of vehicles. Good guys good price good parts. I'd hit them up...

    Brakes Direct is GSL, not sure what the exact business arrangement is but close enough anyway.

    No, but he mentioned buying DBA4000. For about the same price you can land a set of Brembo Sport. No comparison in quality or longevity.

    But I agree, for street use, a set of DBA Slotted will do the job.

    If you are going to buy the DBA's you should save your money and just buy the RDA ones at half the price. You don't track the car so it isn't like they are really stressed out.

    Even Ebay rotors would be fine for what you do with them. You worry too much..

    Rotors are easy to change so who cares if they wear out a bit quicker.. Save the cash..

    Lol sounds like you chewed up their (experienced and specialised) time figuring out what you wanted then took their advice elsewhere to save a few bucks. I'm glad that happens to other people too.

    Rob just an fyi since you seem to know it all...i only asked one question in regards to their price for the rotors & if the part numbers i had was correct...a simple search on google will tell the part numbers for the rotors, so not sure what your issue is with asking for a price as nobody would spend more for anything when they can get it cheaper, unless your made of money which I'm clearly not made off.

    Next time dont go off topic & troll if you dont have all the facts...especially when your a moderator :)

    Rotors...

    Col, on my car, I'm running RDA rotors. They are slotted and dimpled gold passivated rotors. I can't give you the product code for them, as my front rotors are from the 350z (the rears are 300zx), but if you contact RDA, they will be able to sort you out. They were very helpful with me when I had to swap my front rotors (they were meant to be 350z, but were intact Skyline rotors).

    Either way, they've been great and I have no complaints. I don't track my car as you know, but do give it some spirited runs and braking on cruises.

    But either way, whether you go RDA or DBA, you'll be able to get some good rotors. I would also suggest some braided break lines if you don't already have them.

    I run the eBay elcheapo DBA rotors..... I had them sent directly to the cryo joint and had them dipped....

    best bang for buck stoppers I've ever had, even better than the ultra expensive name-brand rotors I had for a while.

    google -> cryogenic freezing brake rotors to learn more ;)

    I haven't tried that yet but believe it makes a big difference even to crap rotors

    you would not believe just how huge a difference it makes..... like I said, I ditched my expensive name brand rotors and stuck with the eBay DBA's

    biggest problem I have is actually getting heat in them from cold starts, need to gently ride the brakes a bit to get them warmed up, otherwise at that first giveway sign I'll faceplant the horn button

    Kingy i just read up on it & definitely looks worth it especially considering how cheap it is to get done. I may end up getting it done to my dba rotors i got for my akebono calipers. I also found your old thread with local locations but looks like one of them may have moved, but still worth a try. Thanks for sharing.

    I have cryo-treated DBA 5000 rotors in the front of my race car and they last twice as long as untreated rotors - this is with very aggressive race pads (PMU H16, Endless ME20 etc).

    Mine were done at Cryocyle, Factory 9 / 11 Clarice Road, Box Hill South, Victoria, 3128.

    I have also had my DBA 5000 rotors on the front of my Z34 treated and they have covered 60,000 road K's and 17 track/sprint days.

    Cryo-treating works.
