My new twin turbo Zed has a power steering leak. I've gone ahead and replaced the high pressure hose and the leak hasn't gone away. Unfortunately I cannot pinpoint exactly where the leak is happening but it seems to be up near the pump somewhere. The pump was rebuilt when the engine was out and the alternator is completely dry. The only place I can see fluid is on top and under the reservoir which doesn't seem to be much at all. Ive tightened the clamps. The car also still has stock Hicas. I know this is a far fetched question but where is the second most common leak areas for power steering besides the high pressure hose and pump?
Thoroughly degrease & dry the area, then while your looking for the leak, have someone turning the steering wheel from lock to lock numerous times. If the leak is where you think it is, you'll see it.
I had the front oil seal leaking on mine. It is also possible one of the orings were not seated properly.
If you have PS fluid on top of reservoir the cause is overfilling. I do not fill my Zeds more than 1/2 to 2/3 full. I have found that when the fluid gets hot it expands and overflows.
Thanks guys. All the copper washers look okay to me. Not sure on the o rings on the pump internals. I recently replaced the J hose on my NA. is it possible to use an NA J hose on a TT? Also, do the Hicas lines commonly leak? I'm thinking of eliminating the system with the NA pump conversion.
Sorry, I disagree, why is downgrading your system a good thing. If you want to simplify the system, yes this does it but its no longer an original 300zxTT. You want a simple car sell the 300zx and buy a Hyundai Excel.
Martin! Martin! Martin! :agree: You are 100% correct. Unfortunately there are misguided individuals that are of the opinion they can react faster than an engineered computer system.
^ not always the case. I went to an na powersteering pump & deleted hicas as could not retain the TT pump & hicas when I fitted the na diff on my TT to take advantage of the 4.08 na diff ratio. Result was all positive, definitely feels lighter & acceleration improved from the change in diff ratio
NA and TT J hoses are different diameters, this also means you can't easily use a TT resevoir with an NA pump
Update. I've had the car up today and found the leak coming from the high pressure hose which I replaced a week ago. Why would this newly hose be leaking? Could it be dodgy?
Yep, a dodgy hose connector, is it a new pressure hose? Who made it up? Pirtek? Hydraulic pressure is about 400psi, so the high pressure site got to be A1, it's hard enough to fit the hose.
Did you put both the locating brackets along the cross member back on properly? I got lazy the first time I changed mine and it didn't last long.
I replaced one for a fellow forum members and it lasted a week or 2. Supplier was good about it but wondering if there was a bad batch ? Cheers Dave
