hi guys i have 89 z32 N/A auto and after seeing others, i do not have the power button on mine, yet under the console there is a plug there already wired in the lume. Can this switch just be added or is there a change to be made in the trans, any ideas.

Sounds like you may have an auspec zed which didn't come with this button.

If you do have an auspec, the button cannot just be added.

There wasn't an '89 Auspec though, they started selling from 1990.

It's pretty easy to tell if the car is a Jspec, does it have a 180KPH or 260KPH speedo?

If 180KPH it's a JDM car and if the loom is there with a spot for the switch, you could probably just swap over the centre console piece which has the button and plug it in.

    I have a 1990 Auspec and I don't have that button.

I have driven other non300zx and that button didn't seem to function exactly like the explanation below.

The hold, as seen on all Nissan (Maxima, Pathfinder, etc) JDM autos, is a winter tool, but so much more. If you turn it on, it will stay in whatever gear you select, like 2nd for starting in snow. However, when using it underway, shifting 1st to 2nd, or 2nd to 3rd, it will shift immediately, irregardless of throttle input. In other words, at full acceleration in 1st, slam 2nd at say 4000rpm and it will shift, won't rev thru til the normal shiftpoint

Wow, you must have the first Z32 in Australia (white?)

Do you have an Australian compliance plate, it will be near the driver's side headlight.

Anyway, if you want to tweak your auto shift points then check the voltage across your TPS.
Do a search through the tech section.
(Tip, use a couple of dress maker pins, push along the wires on one side of the TPS plug so you can make contact with the pins and measure with multimeter, don't pierce the insulation on the wires)

What voltage are you getting from your TPS?
Don't just move it without knowing the voltage.

    As an example,
My auto is slightly overfilled. The mechanic moved the TPS without checking the voltage and felt it changed OK, probably didn't check it, probably didn't make sure it didn't move while tightening the mount bolts. It was 0.18v and after driving it up the road it was whiney and changes were slow and smooth (but hunting and slippy, I felt)

Member on this forum referred me to FSM value of 0.45volts, so I changed it.
The auto was horrible at that, the changes took too long, the revs were too high, easing off the pedal to encourage a gear change didn't work all the time. Another member suggested I drop it to 0.42volts for automatic. That was better, but changes were very sharp, like dropping clutch (like a Japsec using hold button) so I eased it back and eventually settled on 0.34volts. This is OK for my transmission and TPS and slightly high level of auto transmission fluid. If I had a new TPS, I would definitely suck some auto trans fluid out and put the new TPS at 0.45v and tweak it lower to suit my Auto Trans, if needed.

So it seems that too much trans fluid = difficult gear change and more sudden.
Also the higher the TPS voltage = difficult gear change and more sudden.

Your combination of 20year old TPS and 20year old AutoTrans and the way you plant or lift off your foot (and whether you have perfectly filled your fluid level in transmission) is something you will have to sort out, but don't stray too far from FSM or your TPS voltage will be difficult to determine.
