Getting the door trim off with the window up

My driver's side power window has shat itself. Usually when removing the door trim, the first step is to wind the window down for that bastard bolt on the b-pillar, but I can't. I've decided by bending the shit out of the pillar trim and using the right tool I could probably get the door trim off...Is there another way?

Pull the switch out and unplug it find the 2 wires that go to the window motor and carefully use some wire and a battery to wind it down. not in a position at the moment to tell you which wires you are after unfortunately

I see. Would that depend on the cause of the problem? For example, if it's the motor itself that's broken (and I suspect it is), using a battery will not work.

You may have stripped the plastic gear in your window motor, which may be stripped in one spot only, hence why you cant get the window down.
By manually using external wires may get the motor winding down enough to get your window down.
You could try using your window switch down, while a second person pushes down on the window (don't use too much force - you don't want to break the glass).
I had a similar problem, jiggled the glass up and down enough, to get the motor to drop the window, then pulled it all apart to find the gear was stripped.

if the gear is stripped you would most likely still hear the motor whirring, in my experience the most common cause of electric window failure in older cars is the switch followed closely by wires jumping/breaking in cars with a wire mechanism not a sweeper arm like ours has. having said that dont rule out a stripped gear as it can happen as pointed out above.

Open the door and check the wiring where it bends ( like your elbow ) at the hinge you may find a break that can be fixed without striping door.

First thing you need to do is find out if the window motor is working or not.

Like stumagoo suggested. See if you can hear a gear turning sound coming from inside the door, when you press the button.

If you can here a noise then its most likely a broken gear inside the motor. Replace with a working motor and your good to go.

Otherwise if you don't hear anything you need to then check your fuses and or the window amp module which are known to die overtime. The module is behind the door car on the RH side door in the lower RH side corner. You can pop the car off slightly and reach inside the door and try to disconnect the module from the door harness and then to unscrew it to free it from the car. If that is what has died replacing that will fix the problem.

I can here a bit of a whirring when I press the button. It's not much but it's there. I suspect the motor. I'll do what I can - check the wires near the switch. Maybe I'm wrong and I'll get lucky.

When my motor failed i was able to lift and push the window down with my hand as the gear inside the motor had nothing to lock onto. If u can move the window with ur hand its definztely the motor. Bitch of a job to replace too.

I got the door skin off. Bought a thin wrench to do the two bolts behind the pillar trim, it wasn't too bad.

Now I need to solve the problem. I've tried re-solding my transistor box as recommended in a lot of places, it hasn't solved the problem. Also, the transistor itself moves when I press the window switch up/down, it appears to work.

My window doesn't move around at all. I tried to move it when I was getting the door skin off. This would suggest that maybe my gear isn't stripped, maybe the motor is okay. I'd rather not replace the motor if I don't have to.

When I press and hold the up/down buttons I hear a slight whirr, which lasts a couple of seconds. Then a click and no more whirring. Then a few seconds later it will click again, and will start to whirr again until it clicks again. It's very odd.

Adam, do you think I need a new motor?

Unsure, when my window stopped working I could hear the motor gear spinning with the same whirr sound but it was continueous and I was able to move the window by hand while the motor gear was spinning meaning the gear was not gripping the internal motor mechanism so it could move the window up and down.

The fact the motor is working is a good sign as it would imply that the system is electrically connected up enough to allow the motor to be powered when activated by the switch.

But the motor gear may be broken and unless you take it out and pull it apart and then retest it I cant be sure that's what is wrong.

What I'd like you to do for me is to inspect the motors outter cog wheel inside the door when you press the window switch and see if it is moving. Its possible the motor is jammed internally and that's why it has stopped working.

let me know what you find and go from there.

I'll do that as soon as I can. Will I be able to see the cog inside the door without taking it out? I may have to remove the speaker enclosure.
    Thanks for your help :)
