Hi guys I'm new here and I've been offered a Z32fairlady targa top manual non turbo 1994. It's done 200 000 ks but been reconned at 125 000, its got a heavy duty clutch and a second hand gearbox been put in a few months ago.

Front headlight glass is smashed and needs replacing am I correct in assuming this is hard to come by? Needs a new paint job on bonnet and underneath petrol cap, back spoiler is weathered needs to be removed or replaced. How much will this cost me? I would love to have a z but need to know if it is worth $4000 dollars or not...

cheers guys any help would be great need some honesty and advice, I'm selling/trading my gemini and I've been offered to swap for a z or 4000 cash from a different person.

I just went to Google and typed in "Z32 headlight" for you. The result was this, a RHD headlight for $149

You don't really give enough info to asses the Zeds value (pics would help). Someone would really need to look at it person.

I will say that a Gemini will be easier to shift than a Z and $4000 sounds like a pretty good price for a Gemini to me. If it were me I would take the 4K and keep saving to add to it to buy a decent Z.

The fact the guy is prepared to swap it for your 4K Gemini means its probably not one of the better examples of a Z out there, and a Z32 isn't the sort of car you want a bomby version of I'm my opinion (especially if you can't do all the mechanical work yourself). Put it this way you don't buy a Z because you want cheap, trouble free motoring, you buy a Toyota Corolla (or today's equivalent) for that. They're expensive cars to keep going, always have been, and that hasn't changed just because they're now so old that some will sell for only 4K.

As it says in some guys forum signature...cheap, reliable, high performance - you only get to pick 2.
The Z is high performance so you're only left to pick between cheap/reliable.

Do you want to buy a nice 10k Z and only spend 10k repairing it or do you want to buy a bomby 4K Z and spend 20K repairing it? Those numbers might be an exaggeration but not by much (I bought a 10K TT Z32 myself and spent 30K repairing/upgrading it. I sold my old NA non-operative Z32 to my brother in law for only 1.5K and he only spent 10K getting it going and maybe 5K keeping it going the last 2 years).

    Welcome to the forum.

If it were me I'd take the 4k and keep saving. Unfortunately Z's are expensive these days in almost every way accept the purchase price (majority on the market).

With regards to the car your looking at, never trust anything anyone says about their car without paperwork ie receipt for engine, gearbox ect. You'll need anywhere from 5-10k to re spray the car + any mechanical/roadworthy repairs. So almost straight away your at 12-14k, which will buy you an nice example possibly off this forum from someone who loved it.

Good luck with your search, but I'd defiantly steer clear of this one

    Hi. Welcome to the forum.
As the others have said, do your homework.
Try to team up with forum members from your area and they can point you in the right direction.

You can download a mechanical check list from here to help pinpoint any issues.

Headlights can be purchased here from guys parting out cars for approx. $50-80
There is also a Zed dedicated wrecker in SA so that is a bonus.

Just for your info, all Datsun/Nissan Z Cars that were sold in Japan were marketed as Fairlady's. There is a very common misconception that the Fairlady was a luxury model when in fact it is purely the name of the car when sold in Japan.

Where are you located? If the zeds not too far away from me im happy to eyeball it and check it over.

Paint work i could help you out there if needed.

Headlights are dime a dozen on the forum. Bank on 100 kudos for a good one.

Paint at a shop would start at 500 and go up very easy, pending the work needed. Like i said, i could help you out if needed... time permitting, etc, etc...

Any pics? post a link if you have one.

    Cheers.

    $4000.00!

From your description that Z is one to walk away from, or buy it for parts at a significantly lower price than $4K.
A Z with 200,000 km on the clock that has been looked after, wouldn't need a rebuilt engine & replacement transmission. :p
Why would a non turbo Z require a heavy duty clutch?
Best advice: Get a local forum member to check it out for you!

    Thank you so much everyone
I can't work out how to set up a link to put up a picture of it. Its located in Davoren park south australia and I'm all the way up on Goolwa so it is a long drive for me, I have planned to possibly make the trip down on sunday to have a look and talk to a painter about price to fix it etc (yipes not looking forward to hearing the numbers for that)
Cheers for clearing up the "fair lady" issue, after googling on my part I discovered this for myself. I am weary about the fact that it's had a replacement gearbox so thanks for that too.

Cheers everyone I can't believe how helpful everybody is here :)
