One for the Stereo and electronics boffins...

I've installed a few stereo systems in my time, and while I wouldn't call myself an expert, I know my away around wiring setups, amp setups, crossovers etc etc...

But this problem has me stumped...

So I bought myself a new Alpine INE-w947e double din unit. Seems like a great unit, but its doing something that I cant quite figure out.

So this is what is happening:

I turn the ignition to acc, and the headunit turns on. Great. Antenna mast comes up, amplifier turns on, noise coming out of the speakers. If I then turn off the ign (the car is now off), the headunit seems to power down and turn off. However, the antenna mast is still up and the amp power light is still on. But the screen on the headunit is completely dark, buttons are non responsive and no sound coming from the speakers. After about 2 minutes, the antenna mast will go down and the amp power light will completely switch off. It seems that the headunit is holding some sort of charge for those couple of minutes even with the ign off.

Now, if in that 2 minutes of maintaining charge, if I try and start the car or turn the key to acc to power up the head unit, nothing happens. The headunit remains off, but the amp and antenna will remain active with no sound from the speakers. I have to wait the full two minutes for it to completely lose its charge, before the headunit will spring back to life. If i press the reset switch within those 2 minutes, then the headunit will start up, but then obviously I've lost all my settings. Weird.

Now, in the hope of trying to isolate the problem, Ive disconnected pretty much everything from the headunit; ie, rca cables, remote turn on wire, power antenna wire and all the fancy reverse camera cables and auxillary stuff that this unit comes with. So really the only thing connected to it is the ground, the red ign wire and the yellow constant power wire. And with all this disconnected, it still displays the same problem. It will take about 2 minutes for a full shutdown / power discharge before it will turn on again.

So I've rechecked everything, double checked all the wiring. Everything looks fine, but it still misbehaves. The only thing that breaks the 2min freeze cycle is if I unplug the 12v constant yellow wire. I plugged in my trusty CDA-9855, using the same harness that I used with the INE-w947e (the harness is identical for both units) and everything worked fine with that unit. So I assume then that there is something faulty with the INE-w947e. I've also updated the firmware as provided on the Alpine website, but still no change. Anyway, I'm going to take the car down to the dealer where I bought the unit and show them exactly whats happening.

If you've read all that, many thanks. Any suggestions or what to try and trouble shoot would be greatly appreciated.

I think it's definitely faulty, never see that happening on a head unit before

Mark I've seen that exact problem on my friend's civic...he had a alpine double din DVD player...with his he couldn't fix it as he thought it was just how the head unit was made so that the internal memory doesn't get corrupted hence why it take time to "shut down" properly...however I would highly recommend asking Billy (aazn) as like Baz said he is the an to talk to about audio stuff. Good luck

You could contact Alpine in Melbourne, or perhaps the retailer if they also do installations.

Haven't heard that problem before, few things I can think of.
    - It needs a few minutes to shutdown correctly, or;
    - It's faulty...

I'd just get in touch with the supplier and see what they say. I had a faulty head unit once and JB HI FI were more than happy to replace it.

Wiring does funny things, my mate installed a head unit into his drift car, and ever since, the car stays on for a few seconds after he turns it off hahaha. Lucky its his beater because he couldn't give two shits ;)

Wire the power and ground to a power supply or just a car battery. If the head unit does the same thing it is faulty. If all is well then it is wiring.

Spot on way to test it. Use a 12 volt battery and wire
    - to - on battery
Constant power to + on battery
Hold Acc wire to + on battery
then switch on and test unit
    Disconnect acces wire from battery
    Then see what happens
If it still plays up the head unit has a fault
If it works the wiring is the cause

    Cheers Dave
