Hey guys, want to pick up a fire extinguisher to fit to my car. Don't know much about them. Is it legal to have them posted? If not, where can I go in Sydney? -A
Must admit I've never seen one, I think they are coloured that way to make them easy to see and obviously identifiable at a distance so any other colours you find are likely to be pretty bold too. I think some Mazda sports cars back in the day came with a silver Mazdaspeed branded extinguisher but other than that I've only seen red, maybe yellow on a boat some time but not sure??
This. There are different colours and stripes which denote what it's for. An option would be to find a pouch or bracket that covers most of it up or get a custom black leather one made up. That would look great.....as in like a stubby holder sort of thing.
Theo ive seen black ones aswell as chrome ones. Afaik they can only be send via couriers as it has a risk of going off just like airbag steering wheels last time i asked. Ive got mine mounted in front of the passenger seat with a bracket that was made up, which i got off Tekky. Abraham
Your right. Yellow type is now illegal . I dragged a bloke out of a burning car a few years back then emptied my red one on the fire. Fire went out then quickly restarted. A bloke on a Harley trike rocks up and emptied a yellow one onto the fire and it stayed out . The fire brigade arrived 5 minutes to late then decided they wanted to have the bloke on the Harley fined for using a yellow one to put out the fire . Copper wisely decided the odds were against them on that one  . The conversation was a real eye opener between the copper and the firey You could just carbon wrap one. Cheers Dave
Yellow type is a halon extinguisher only available in special circumstances with special permits, all others have to be red with their appropriate coloured strip this denotes type of medium) also make sure they have the 5 ticks of the ASNZ standards. every few months remove it from the mount flip upside down and give it a good tap with a rubber mallet, turn it right way up and upside down again, Listen very carefully you should hear the sound of the powder (most small ones are powder and have a white band) falling, this sounds like its half full of sand. if you have the unfortunate need to use it and can remember give it a short sharp tap on the bottom before use to break the powder up again, I tap the base on the ground. - Yes I spent time as a fire safety tech and serviced extinguishers etc.
if you can get one that's CAMS approved the bracket should be strong enough to stop it becoming a missile in a crash.
