I'm going to guess your on a phone Rob  so for what I can decipher yes I think it will work out to bra good deal. He will use Commodore uni's I believe, everything will be balanced and clocked. If I still have vibrations after all that, I know I need to move on to say the diff mounts and so on.

Funny thing is I've gone full circle here! Manual then back to Auto....one piece back to two piece

Ill talk to him about possible deal to make up some two pieces for our Z's... And ill sell them on if I get enough interest...see how things go ;)

Talking about drive shafts.. I'm working on a new Ford Taurus and it has a 3-piece drive shaft!

I thought Tauruses were front wheel drive?

Having said that, I think the new ones come in AWD as well, not sure if you could get one here though.

Also, I was briefly part owner of the worst Taurus ever.

Based on what what my occupation, you would think I might have just a smige more knowledge than you guys.... I'm always working in the future on future cars with engineering. This is a 2015 release. And it doesn't matter where it is released, it still has that type of shaft.

Does that mean that there will be AWD Tauruses sold here some time then?

Can't say ;) but I don't look after the Australian vehicles, more Asia, except for a new Everest (which is engineered here). The Taurus is obviously coming to our market but I don't know anything on specs. Possibly will have a 2.7L v6 EcoBoost, with a dont quote me because I didn't really take note, 300hp + or -. I think I saw that engine with that sort of specs in the U.S, possibly for their Lincoln/Taurus )they have the same platform). I would expect our Taurus should have a v6, and 4cyl EcoBoost variants, RWD and FWD variants. The Taurus I'm working on for China doesn't have AWD.

Ford Taurus, some say 'styling ahead of its time ;) '

We all know that Ford has an AWD platform, most notably used in the X-type Jaguar, European Mondeo, but I've never heard of it as being specified in the Taurus.

    That car was always FWD.

There is a funny story with all this, and may or may not be helpful for others decisions.

So, this weekend I had the brand new two piece fitted, but we had massive vibrations starting at 40km/h!!!! No way would you want to push that further  So we measured any run out on the car (was 20 thou out), took it off and put it back into the machine. Heated and cooled a few spots to pull the shaft straighter. Eventually we got it below 10 thou which is within specs and reason. Spun it up to 7000rpms and it was still under 10 thou.... Straight as I die!

Put it back in and sure enough it made no difference. Tried to space the center bearing down to get a better angle on the front shaft....still, no good, 50km/h and your teeth are coming out

So at this point I'm thinking its not the shaft and something else more serious is amiss. We ran out of options and time and decided to stick the one piece back in (which he balanced to fix the 100km/h vibration for re-sale) and it was as smooth as a babies but! All the way through to 110km/h!!!

In conclusion, we have no idea what the heck was wrong with the two piece shaft but it definitely did not want to cooperate with us. It was as straight and as vibration free as any perfect shaft in the machine, but not in the car. In the end I wasn't charged for anything, and I have the one piece in my car still, which is 100% vibration free now :zlove:
The guy was telling me of similar unexplainable situations like this with other cars, it's an unknown. Now this may not be the case for everyone and could be a rare case, but if you are interested, it was my old two piece tubes, they cut if the uni's and put all brand new Holden uni's and yokes, with a new center bearing. I was only going to pay for parts in this case but I would expect the usual price would be between $500 and $600.

Lots of lessons learnt in the last few months!

I have similar story with a two piece and the experts doing a rebalance (on one that the forum member said was perfect - and I have no reason to suspect that it wasn't)
    However
The tailshaft blokes, who also come highly recommended by everyone I speak to, suggested to make sure the balance is perfect before installation. Which was done but when the 2 piece was installed we only went 100meters up the road and it was like driving up a set of stairs.
Everything seemed perfect on the bench but in the car it was crap .. adjustment shims were placed (in desperation) between the centre bearing and the body but it made stuff all difference.
the two piece originally had weights all over it - like 10 -15 both large and small at both ends of each half.
the rebalanced unit only had a few and was only balanced as a two piece unit ..
I wondered if it needed to be balanced as each piece separately and then as a joined unit ..
would this have made any difference ?
It was a mystery for all concerned but it defied logic and also these guys have been doing them as tailshaft specialists and are used by all the dealers in the area.. they are known to get results and it had them baffled?
Every 'factory' tailshaft I have ever seen have weights all over them and yet most of the ones that have been rebalanced are usually only minimal weights.

Its a minefield and we (300zx'ers) have big feet it seems.

Yeah it sure does defy logic, mine only had I think four weights all up (two on each shaft)

its clearly a egr related issue;)

in all seriousness though, theres a few places in Perth that do tailshafts for zeds, and sometimes they just cant seem to "rebalance" the 2 peice shafts, as youve just experienced. another "mystery of the Z" kinda problem.

    It's brand new ;) probably the newest EGR on a Z :p

Well the guy was telling me a story about a commodore that they could never find the reason why they could balance up the original or a new shaft the made (same as my situation), but then when the same commodore model came in they tryed the shaft out of it and it was perfect!??!

Seems like the art of Shaft building needs further evolution

    red32 You talkin' to me?

If you have an auto transmission, the problem could well be the torque-converter. That was the problem with my NA auto, only found after replacing the center-bearing, three rebalances of the two-piece shaft then fitting a one-piece tailshaft.
