Is my transmission on its way out?

Just thought I'd ask here before taking it to an auto specialist.
Any ideas what's wrong with my auto transmission?

-After putting it in reverse it makes a clunking drop noise: Reverse then works like park.
-Putting it in Neutral makes a whiring charge up noise, giving it a small amount of revs seems to make it want to move forward a bit.
    -1st gear no longer works
-Changing from 2nd-3rd-4th etc doesn't seem to have any major issues or concerns.

This all happened recently, I should have taken it in when It first showed signs (made a small clunk noise before when putting it in reverse, didn't make the noise again though)

    Any advice?

Take it to an auto transmission specialist.
Get a quote on repairs, it may be cheaper to purchase a used unit off this forum.

Lol "on its way out"? More like its already out!

It doesn't sound too good to me... It's even almost past a reco.

Depending on what is needed if you go for the reco option (if its not too far gone) will be around the $3000 mark. That's everything done to the point of an almost new trans. But speak with an Auto shop first.

Be careful with buying second hand transmissions as they could be just as bad. Expect that you may need to even reco the second hand trans in the future. Try and buy one that can be test driven first....and remember.... If its seems a bit slow to shift or kick-down, it could simply come down to a new TPS which will fix these and other issues. (That's not for your current trans though).

    Good luck

If you were considering a manual conversion, there are a couple being offered on the forum.

I am surprised that someone hasn't already suggested it ;)

Well I do have a kit for sale but I'm thinking of parting it all out and then selling the Manual it's self for cheap, or rebuild it and sell it as a 'fresh box' (< lol)

I would ask Coz @ CZP, and see if he has any new old stock transmissions.. Generally about $1800 USD + shipping cost which will probably be at around the same price as a rebuilt.

Edit - Just saw the auto TT on the website for $3300 didnt know it was that expensive for Auto but anyways probably better off to have a new one though.

Yeah, I'm a uni student so i'm just not going to have a few grand to throw around haha.
Hopefully auto specialists can sort it out if it isnt anything major. If not I may just have to sell the car and borrow a shit family one.

To be honest, I had very similar symptoms about a year ago. Got a little scary when I was driving up a massive hill one night and the car was just revving but not changing to the next gear. Turns out I just needed a fluid change as the previous fluid was very black and burnt.

Cost $140, but hey I have never had an issue since!

I dont think a z32 is a good economical choice unless you know how to fix issues yourself.

As Jamersss mentioned changing fluid would be best. Its a good idea to inspect old fluid for metal bits might give you a clue to the health of the transmission. Also you can do a transmission flush and change the filter..

Have you done the auto tranny diagnostics?

See if it spits any errors. I've had my own share of transmission dramas, turned out it's my revolution sensor busted. but your symptoms are different to mine. if the diagnostic doesn't help, then see an auto specialist, preferably someone who knows the Z.

auto transmission is a complicated thing, you'd be lucky if they can find the issue straight away. but in most circumstances its all about solving the system by ellimination. A specialist will quote you for their hourly rate, but will not guarantee how long the job will take.

First thing first, fluid change. good luck.

check fluid. should be a light clear red. if it is not then try changing it first, i would rather spend $100 on piece of mind than blowing 2k+ on another box.
