    Hi Guys,

Need advice from paint experts please.

    spraycan aerosols used inside garage.

Finally had enough courage to do my first panel and paint repair, and its all about gaining some valuable experience

Long story short.. Im in melbourne, its cold, and I only have 3 days with it..
Sprayed inside a borrowed garage left it there for a day and took it out the next day as it was sunny, and I needed the car to drive, but then left it out assuming it'll be fine. problem was the clear started getting cloudy.(lesson learnt, yes you can laugh). 3 days later of this cloudy finish cloudiness slowly started disappearing but some spots loook like it will be there permanently. Not being happy with my bog repair anyways as I can still see a lot of highs and lows, I thought I should start over and get the panel as flat as I can.. So sanded it all down hammered those highs and redid the panel repair, paint, and clear.

Now the repair is much better its been sitting in the garage with heater on for 3 days, Im planning to leave it there for a week. before I start needing the car again. question is If i take it out after that will it start getting cloudy again, or the lesson here is just simply don't do panel paint repairs during winter??

Perhaps it took too long to cure? Mobile guys doing a repair like yours would generally use heat lamps. Do you have anything you can apply direct heat with? Even halogen work lights would be better than nothing.

    cloudy pic

youtube told me to do it 10 mins between coats.

What I didnt follow is how many coats... my first attempt, i think I did about 8-10 coats clear. now thinking of it, It was probably way too thick, didnt dry properly, left it out in cold weather.

my second attempt only 4 coats clear, inside the garage to dry next to a heater. hopefully a better result

Your paint will normally give instructions as to his long before recoat and at what temp

That pink stuff looks like blade putty, I hope there's something with more substance underneath it...

Blade putty is supposed to be used in an extremely thin layer to remove the tiniest of bubbles, like the head of a pin sort of thing.

Use heat lamps, just set 2 up At a reasonable distance so they don't burn anything, get the surrounding temp to about 30 deg roughly( just so its not cold) then giv it a go. 10min flash time is plenty. Just need to paint in warm temps otherwise it turns out shite

    no probs with rattle can

I believe the blend is all about the technique, providing you have the paint closely match the original and to clearcoat the whole entire panel.

sure you'd definitely get better results from decent gears but I haven't got budget for this repair. I went through a few panel beaters for this big dent and ask for quotes.. it ranges from $600 to $800.

anyways this DIY breakdown( to anyone thinking of going this path)
$60 2 cans of paint(colour code off the shelf was slightly off so a pro color matched it to the area to be repaired, took him more than half an hour to get it right)
$15 2 cans clear( on special)
$15 primers(inc. etch. also on special)
    $10 bog
$35 mouse sander(was going to do it all by hand, its too hard, and took too long)
    $12 extra sandpapers (400, 800, 1000, 2000 grits)
$8 cutting compound(for the orange peel)
    $8 wax and grease remover.
    $2 painters tape

    all up $165.

a week now after my second attempt. the heater did the job. still looks pretty good. :) will keep it inside the garage for those cold nights for another week just in case.

    thanks to everyone's advice.
