I thought id bump this and ask if there is a way to use one of these little android TV devices? Its got a USB port and comes pre rooted.
That android TV thing just let's you hook up your internet hub to the HDMI on your TV. Just shoot a message to Darth Vader and let him advise what you need for his forth coming app. Vader is using a Bluetooth adapter from his ECU, so you would need a tablet or phone that has Bluetooth. ie, any Android phone or a Samsung tablet or Nexus tablet, maybe a few others these days (check specs).
This is correct. The TV thingo doesn't have any way to connect to it from the outside world, so it isn't suitable. If you want to go hard-core and interface a small device to the car, something like the IOIO (pronounced yoyo) will do it, but it still needs a PC or Android device hanging off it. IOIO: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11343 I have had so much trouble with Android that I am actually considering dropping it in favour of a Windows app using something like this in the car (with appropriate casing): That's a full PC in under 244mm x 244mm (sans HDD and Power Supply). Well, I am using Visual Studio 2012 on Windows 8, and I am registered with the Microsoft store to create Modern AND original apps on the Microsoft Store, so yes, I could create apps for the Surface RT. And I own one, so it makes even more sense. I am doing a fixed-price app for a client now, so I am working 12 hour days, 5 days a week, so my capacity to do other stuff is a little limited, but once this is done, I will look at it.
Actually, Polish might be onto something http://www.google.com/url?q=http://www.raspberrypi.org/&sa=U&ei=VurvUaXwE-qXiQfemICIBg&ved=0CBsQFjAA&usg=AFQjCNF3eFw77Tatxz--HwYEpk6H4Dh_RA That Android TV box is probably using the Raspberry Pi credit card size computer. Vader since you are looking at those mini ATX VIA PC's have you also looked at that Raspberry Pi ? $25 on eBAY.
The Raspberry Pi runs Linux. I can't code for Linux. Well, I can, but only with a development environment that doesn't have access to the Serial port. And without serial, I can't talk to a diagnostic port. So that's a deal-breaker. The info I posted about those other smaller boards - they all can run Windows.
I was looking for something like this to use specifically with Vader's app. Single Din Android 4.0 Car PC DVD with Detachable Panel GPS 3G WiFi Bluetooth ipod support 1.2G Dual Core and 1G DDR2 Memory. http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/731433654/Single_Din_Android_4_0_Car.html
What do you mean? is it because of the hardware? or software? I received the MK808b the other day and so far it has worked with USB keyboards and hard drives.
There is an 8" android 4.1.3 tablet with Bluetooth, GPS, micro SD card slot, WiFi and 3G phone (need sim and plan) for sale locally. $169 That would have been good for the (now abandoned) Vader app (built into the centre console). You don't usually get Bluetooth for that price.
Ok, so the Android app is not abandoned. It just won't happen exactly as I originally envisaged it, but I can't say anything more right now.
http://www.trackelectronics.com.au/consultBT So lets go back to the original post. Does anyone else use this app with Track Electronic bluetooth adapter plugged into the ODB plug under the dash? Mine will show one of three messages in the top title bar section of the window. 1. Listening..... nothing is happening, have to stop bluetooth and start it again. 2. Connected.... this means it isn't connected and I have to restart the app. The screen graphic displays the two buttons [Monitor Sensors] & [Error Codes] but they are inactive. 3. Connected Consult BT.... that usually works, but recently NOT as the buttons are inactive like when it just shows Connected. If you have the BT log test program, mine fails on most of the tests (always has) but I am told that is normal. It did work in the past even though it failed its own diag tests. Now I find it fails all the tests. So it you have one, how is it for you. Track Electronic doesn't have stock according to their website. It has been good to have it (when it was working)
