resurface flywheel?

HI all,

Shortly will be doing the 5 speed swap, have the used flywheel and clutch from the donor car. clutch looks to have a good bit of meat left in it, do I need to resurface the flywheel? getting quotes around $80 to do so here in perth. is it required when same clutch going back in?

You don't need to when re-using the clutch, but it would certainly be a good idea. Would be a pita to pull it out because of clutch shudder or something similar.

Your quote is ball-park if it is a "machine only" job- no removal or re-fit.
I put the feelers out for prices for a similar job just last week.

 

It's doubled in price since last time I had one done. But that was ~5 years ago...

 

I paid $100 for mine, remove and re-fit included.

Worth while, and certainly if it has any heat spots or scoring.

 

$30 to have my already removed flywheel resurfaced. Job done at australian clutch supplies. $100 for doing our big John Deere tractor flywheels.

 

That sounds more realistic. I paid $30(in St Marys, Sydney)about 18 mths ago.

 

Put a new clutch plate in while you are at it, also pressure plate. Good quality parts will last years. I don't see the sense in putting in unknown used parts. It's a gamble. May work ... maybe not

Can someone recommend a place in north Brisbane to get a flywheel machined, and the price they paid. Its my next job on my to do list Cheers

Careful when machining flywheels...

I had a S14 one a couple of weeks back, they machined too much off it and buggered it. The middle of the clutch plate was making contact with the flywheel bolts.

However,
If your going to fit used stuff then my view would be just measure the plate thickness, if that good then just chuck it all in and away you go. Itll work Ok.
As Eric mentioned, you cannot guarantee it wont shudder a bit but, hell, it cost you bugger all!!!!!

I see little point in machining one part to new when everything else related is worn.
Surely, if you flatten the flywheel then would you not flatten the pressure plate? Then if you flattened the fly and pressure plate then surely youd replace the driven plate and have everything nice and flat to begin with???
Flattening the used driven plate is pointless.

i had mine done at abs in kewdale for 55. it looked good when i picked it up so im happy with it.
i know perth brake parts in orrong road charges 65 or 75.

 

I was going to ask a similar question about having it balanced. But I figured since I have had auto to manual conversion and an engine swap on top of this. It would probably be a good idea in the long run to reduce harmonic damage to crank bearings. Since it could not have been factory balanced with engine, flywheel had probably been weathering at wreckers and I do not know whether it was balanced with the engine. But assume nothing, I will attempt to find out. If you have factory fitted flywheel you may want to leave it? Quoted $88 by local mob this way for balancing. I do not think the bushing had been correctly installed for starters??? ===>

 

Then you will also not want to change the OEM clutch either Only externally balanced Nissan engine I know of is the VH45.

Machine your flywheel, do it right.

 

Hmm......Otherwise have balanced with aftermarket pressure plate already fitted???

All I can find in ASM so far is here.

So if we have run out over 0.15mm we're supposed to repair with "emery paper"???

Actually sorry I read that a bit too quickly.

It says to do this for "burns or discoloration". Not runout.
