you have a fuel leak you shouldn't have a fuel smell at all
mine did and it turned out to be the tank leaking at the fuel sender
only happened when i got up it or it was full of fuel and it used to run down the side of the tank
they can also commonly leak around the motor and cause fires
check fuel lines and look at the tank after a spirited drive

Check to see that the lid for the fuel pump is sealed properly and check all the hoses in the engine bay.

My FPR didn't even have a clamp on it, lol.

Mine had a slight fuel smell since I bought it but recently it got very strong so I went looking around in the engine bay and when the car is cold it was pissing out of this hidden line.

Replaced all the fuel lines and no more smell :)

its not coming from the engine bay, its coming from inside the car might have to have a little look around inside, and it onli does it on hot days like 33 degrees and over never ever on a cold day

Sure its not coming via the air vents, I can't think of any other way for the fuel smell to enter the cabin unless the shifter boot is split or something and its coming underneath besides the obvious open window

Probably best after a drive leave it idling in a wind sheltered area and have a close smell around the engine bay.. Probably good to have a sniff low down on the sides of the car too theres some rubber fuel hoses at the back at the fuel tank..

Look out for areas of grime around fuel hoses and connections, normally dust will cling to the wet fuel leak and leave a mark when dry.

If you can't find it, at least its a good exercise to slowly change old EFI hoses :D

Also random thought check exhaust, not sure if something will make it run richer on a hot day..

Its probably coming from the engine bay via a broken cowl above the battery (seals to bonnet when not broken) through the AC system that draws through the vent near the wiper pivot.

Maybe only on a hot day because the carbon canister has been removed/modified and fuel tank expansion is being vented to atmosphere in the engine bay radiator support area.

Still need to be checking fuel line clamps etc, looking for tell tale stains and having a good whiff around.

Mine started doing this about 3 years ago. It turned out to be a swollen 'O' ring on the Fuel Pump mounting plate(causing it to pop out of the side of the plate by about 1cm).
Replaced the 'O' ring and no more smell.

Mine just recently started this smell. I can smell it very strong outside around the rear passengers side. Fuel economy has gone out the door too so it's definitely a leak. The 'O' ring on the fuel pump - where is it found ? I'm guessing at the rear under the liftable tab which is located under the spare tyre ?

Also this article is very useful for fuel leaks in engine bay - http://s95014253.onlinehome.us/63104/155876.html

try turning right hard with a good slosh of fuel, if the smell gets stronger.... and its from the passenger side it could be the fuel filler neck. compliance places were dodgey on them.

could it be the carbon cannister being removed?

The smell only started in the last few days when I added an octane booster. I will have a good look around this afternoon to see it is coming from.

quick check for if the tank has a leak when you take the petrol cap off you should hear a sshhhh sound as the tank depressurizes if not it has a leak does not apply to fuel line leaks

my tank always does that, checked the top of the tank no leaks there, turns out its leaking from the rubber hose on cylinder 2 passenger side :(
