Hey guys, as of a few weeks ago I bought myself a manual 90' z31. The previous owner did very little to no driving in it nevertheless had the car serviced every 5000k's and maintained it very well.

Since I got the car I've had no problems with it up until last week. The gearbox has always gotten very warm during the drive to work (45mins) but as of last week when it has heated right up gears become extremely hard to select and at a standstill first and reverse are sometimes impossible to select. At the same time 3rd and fourth will also refuse to go in at times during regular driving. It has its days but the hotter the worse.

What may be the cause of the shifter becoming soo stiff when its heated? and if its linked to the heat what may be causing the gearbox to heat up so much?

    Cheers

    Mikezah build thread incoming!

could be innappropriate gearbox oil being used which changes how thick it is depending on heat and weather. I know in the z32 manual it states different types of oils for different climates maybe you should try something like that first?

    is it a z31 or z32?

your description of a 1990 z31 is not possible, last z31 is 1989 (as is the first z32)

sounds like its got no fluid, but could be afew different things. any funky noises coming from the box.

I'm guessing the last service was gearbox lol!

Maybe the mechanic forgot to put oil in it.. Not the first time this has happened! Or as suggested maybe it has the wrong oil in it.

Before you drive it any further, put it up on stands and drain the gearbox.

check oil. buy a recommended oil and refill

As others have said, classic no or low oil symptoms.

If its been gradually getting worse, indicates a leak. Gear oil will often not leak at a standstill so may not appear on your floor, but residue will be on the box, so have a look, but a drain and refill is a must.
