Hi guys, I've done a search, but there are mixed opinions, so i thought i would post this question myself. Today was an absolute scorcher in sydney, getting to about 40*c, and I had to drive my zed home from work around 1pm, right in the middle of it. Now, normally my operating temperatures sit about 83*c, but today while driving (AC off) I saw it go up to around 95, with around about 92-93 average. Once i got back to my area, i had to put my roof back on to run into the shops for a bit, but once i left i decided to just use the air con rather than the windows and targas. After about 5 mins i heard a beeping noise, and realised it my greddy electric fan controller beeping, saying my car had reached 101*c (FUUUCK). I quickly wound my windows down, and turned the AC off. and the temps fell back down to 93ish.. How hot is too hot? Thanks, Logan.
if you get hot like that again, pull over put the heater on full power. will help to lower temps quicker.
The AUX fan comes on at 105, so you're far from cooking anything. What's your cooling system maintenance like? Probably needs a new clutch fan. Be extra nice and you can bolt my brand new one on for a drive to check.
Really, anything over 100 would be considered unsafe. Most people go with 95 as it leaves a bit of headroom to err on the side of caution. I'd guess a worn out clutch fan or partially blocked (read: old) radiator would be contributing to the extra stress on a hot day.
read the post. HE HAS A GREDDY ELECTRIC FAN CONTROLLER. Once again we see yet another electric thermo unable to keep up with cooling in hot weather.
Agreed, the foremost UK specialist hates the electric fans on Zeds... he even sent me a standard for free just so I'd take the electric one off... lol.. it's vastly improved the temp. you could also do with a good coolant clean/flush and new decent quality coolant.
Sweet, I will do a full flush tomorrow, and see how i go. If that doesn't work, i will revert to stock and see how i go from there.
Has anyone upgraded the thermo fan to a high CFM pusher and dropped the trigger temp, to try and increase the cooling ability?
I used a 14" davies craig pusher on my VH45 conversion with an electric water pump and controller on a TT PWR twin pass radiator. No troubles keeping it cool, actually over cooled it
I put those big alum radiator in 75mm thick kept the shroud and clutch fan, much more efficient, the original one has this hard plastic down both sides that after twenty years gets too brittle and just lets go, safer to be ahead of it
I agree with Chrispy & mholt... you can have a good electric system. however you do have to spec for it.. you can't just buy any old crap off the shelf and expect it to do the job. unfortunately too many people do just that... case in point, mine had an electric fan on it, installed be the previous owner.... think he got it off a computer heat sink... seriously it wasn't that bad but it just couldn't meet the requirements.
Bah, 100 would be considered normnal running on a hot day. At 13psi water pressure along with coolant, the boiling point of water is around of 125deg.C However, all this still highlights the deficiencies of an electric only fan setup. The ONLY electric fan setup worth anything over the stock fan and aux electric fan looks something like this where EVERY cfm of air the fans pull comes thru the radiator. Anything else is a woftam IMO: E
They should have stuck with the original idea of cooling .. 31s got the radiator mounted at a 30 degree angle to the road with a huge air scoop and themos on the back ..so all the air is forced through it ..dun know what temp as the gauge is just hot cold normal lol.. it sits in normal no matter what the outside temp
Would be interested to know what setup you were actually running andymac. Not a hater, but a failure with maintaining temps on my TT with a Zirgo 16" thermo. NA with dual thermos and hysteresis controller with CTS switching input has been successful at keeping temps down. Putting a diode bridge between the ECU wires for AC Compressor Clutch and Auxiliary thermo is also a simple, but effective mod.
Normal eh? So I suppose my zed holding 85degrees on a 40+ degree day is abnormal then? I'm sure numerous z32 owners would disagree with your definition of 'normal' too. The aim is to keep the engine at a reasonable operating temperature, not reach the boiling point of the coolant. What would you know anyway Tassie doesn't get hot days. :rofl:
my car hits close to 88 idling in traffic on 35 degree day ..back to 83 when its moving). I'd panic if it went over 90 This is with front mount and more underdriven than anyone else here. so a good working cooling system shouldn't reach 100. just IMO .. .
Ill agree to this ! My old zed ran 83 all day only hit 90 once in Sydney traffic in summer and that was stock radiator and fan clutch . Not sure how my new set up will operate but I don't expect much difference
I was thrashing all day Friday, with extended time idling between, in very ****ing hot temps and got to 86degs.
