How hard can it be? So the situation is that my clutch fork has rooted itself, so im going to replace that and the slave cylinder at the same time. But i want to know how difficult it will be, the machanic has told me that its going to be a gearbox off job to replace them and says its gonna be over $1000 (which i cant really afford right now) does that sound resonable? I will purchase the parts myself which will bring it down abit, but is this something i could do at home with a mate, or without taking the gearbox off?
I recommend you buy this kit. The fork is case iron instead of pressed steel. http://www.conceptzperformance.com/Cart/description.php?II=6707&Car_Type=300 The gearbox will need to be removed. $400-$500 to pull the gearbox would be more reasonable. I would also be prepared to replace the clutch if it does not have much life left in it.
I changed my own clutch on stands recently and it was probably the most ambitious thing I have attempted on the zed so far. It is DIYable, definately would highly recommend having a helper though in getting the gearbox down and up again, unfortunately I didn't have that luxury and made do with the use of two scissor jacks and a spare tyre. Removing the box from memory: 1. Jack Car 2. Remove exhaust 3. Remove tailshaft 4. Remove Clutch Slave, Starter motor 5. Remove gearbox mount (support transmission) 6. Undo bellhousing bolts 7. Pull back supported box and carefully lower Firstly, understand how everything fits together, and how it comes apart. Read the tech articles- they help! Get a torque wrench and do the clutch and rear main while you're at it as the other guys have suggested.. Spare a weekend and you'll be fine
cheers guys, I didnt even think of the rear main seal but may aswell do it while I can. I will talk to a mate whose pretty good with cars to come help and see if he has the time, probably wont do it for a couple of weeks.
Pulling gearboxes is one of the worst jobs on a zed (or any car). I'd prefer to pull the whole engine out along with the gearbox, easier
If you're just replacing the fork, you can just slide the box back a bit to avoid having to drop it completely. But while you're in there you'd probably be best to do your rear main seal and gasket, throwout bearing, gearbox oil, and look at getting the upgraded 350z pivot ball and clutch fork.
