Hi there, Im currently looking at buying a 300zx and my dilemma is being a student, I havent got a heap of cash like I wish I did, So im in the market for a cheapish 300zx, Problem is a lot of the cheaper NA manuals I see have problems with there paint, Does anyone have an estimated cost of a full respray in a Candy orange, Or a more faded orange than candy orange. Thanks!
That's probably a realistic figure. No doubt you could pay a lot less, but you get what you pay for. The money in a respray is in the preparation before the paint is applied. Naturally if you choose exotic paint the price will escalate.
No way guys! I was quoted just the other day, a same colour, closed doors dust over with base and a clear of $4000... I think that's a realistic "proper" job done... And speaking even more realistic, if your a student, be thankful if you can afford "a" paint job at all! Set your mind to getting a same colour respray! If you paint that poor zee on the outside a different colour to the engine bay and door jambs your FOOL! IMO
You get what you pay for! You can get a job done for between 2K (Backyard)- 15K (show)- its like asking how long is a piece of string - I think 5k as stated above is about on the money in average - 4k job will reflect in quality most likely See the work they have done - find out the details like how many coats of colour clear and base etc etc alternatively like anything - if you want to do it properly - do it yourself- buy the gear and save some $ (then you can even make some on the side whilst studying!)- contrary to all the bull.... claims - spray painting is very easy and not hard to do - there is only two knobs on a spray gun - lol (2.5k should buy everything including paint) - the hardest part is in sanding it so its like a babys bum - smooth as is important for candy colours! - if you can do that - the rest is easy!
I know exactly what you mean, the first repair I had that I paid for myself the colour doesn't match and yes it was quite expensive, compared to my insurance job (and they charged a fortune to the insurance blokes, like 3 times the price for less work) the difference is 2 different worlds. Currently I'm saving up for a respray also. Wont be going cheap thats for sure.
Don't worry about the paint. If you buy a cheap car there will be more important things to spend your money on. Cosmetics and a big stereo have to take a back seat behind safety and reliability.
This is exactly what you should be doing. I'm a university student myself so I understand exactly how you feel. I spent all my spare time in the tech section, not having the coin for a mechanic to do any work I had to do it all myself. Spend your cash on 100k service and other mechanical issues (there will be many) Keep her running and when you finish your studies you'll be able to afford that 10k candy orange respray.
I was watching one of those car shows on TV. Restos? or Gasoline. A guy did a course, practiced on his washing machine or something like that. Painted his car and took it to a car club meet. He didn't say if he did in his garage or if the tafe short course gave use of spray booth.
I live in victoria too.. When i had my ZX resprayed (same colour), i sanded it all down myself. Its really easy, easier than you think! But you need the right sandpaper and right technique. Some research will help you a lot! This method cut down the labour cost of my car heaps! I payed $1500 and was happy with the job. No back yard job, professional in a shop and in the oven. This guy sprays for genuinely cheaper than others, even if you let him sand the car down himself. The place is in campbellfield 3061, if you want me to give you the address or number just let me know
There is enough information on line to learn to spraypaint by yourself in less than a day! (Theres some good info out there on you tube and by pro shops) The rest is practice on washing machines and / or respraying the same job properly - after a week or two you will be good enough in spraying (tip - always use a gravity gun not a feed gun) As stated, the hardest part is learning to sand it smooth as. Even mixing the paints to exact % can be done these days in a measuring container direct from the paint supply for a $1 a container, which means you cannot stuff anything up unless you cannot paint in a straight line. After a while you get to know how much to mix from your head / what dial does what on the gun and everything becomes second nature (and monotonous). Ask a professional spraypainter thats been doing it for 30 years and his instructions will be less than a sheet of paper! His technique however will be professional, exact and meticulous in detail and he will know how to coat a babys bottom with vaseline so that it at its ultra smoothest. Agree with above statements by others in post - mechanicals always come first and certainly before paint! Cheers and goodluck
I actually might know the place your talking about, as i did go around getting quotes before i had mine resprayed... Plus who says that if your a student that you cant afford a respray? look at my sig pic for proof Abraham
