It'd be crazy for that to be legal. Maybe it's never been an issue, didn't they have a rule where old-ish cars get scrapped? Maybe the used car market isn't as significant as it is here.

Why? It's also not illegal to drink in public in Japan. It's a country that is heavily influenced by personal pride rather than whatever you would consider australia to be.

I used to run a domestic "confectionery" back home if that qualifies...but I do enjoy breads a lot, especially brioche and escargots (those snail-like scrolls) hence the name :p . And yes, I fence with the university during my free time so I have a perky right cheek.

In my country of origin, all cars must be scrapped within 10 years of purchase, regardless of frequency of use / condition, the key reasons being : land scarcity and phasing out of heavily polluting vehicles.

In addition, as ryzan has mentioned there is that social aspect as well; cars are so ridiculously expensive (a 1600cc vehicle eg. Suzuki Swift will cost you about 60k + 100k certificate of entitlement) the moment you own one, it means you've "arrived".

As you can imagine, ANY old sports automobiles (eg. imported RX7s, 4th Gen Zeds ) are a rarer sight than Lumbos and are attainable only by the relatively wealthy.

I was actually told this by Ben Lippa:

As for finding a Manual , 2+2 , TT , stock body, I had a hell of a time finding my zed with those same specs in the whole of Aust (although I was too stubborn to budge on any of them) and in the ended up importing.
Oh, and I did go to Vic about a year ago during a road trip to check out a 1992(?) black zed with those specs, at that price range and it turns out it was 2 zeds welded together through the middle, so if you're looking at a black zed.. be a bit cautious xD, I wonder if the guy ever sold it..

    So..patience is the key :D
    Good luck xD

That may be so, but doesn't stop them winding back the clocks on export. Car's never going to be registered in that country again, and will have the new odo rearing recorded in Australia so not really traceable unless you have genuine paperwork that came with the car.
