There are two things that bug me about my Z31.
-One of the headlights doesn't turn on until it's flipped all the way up. They're supposed to turn on as soon as they start flipping up, which allows you to have them on while they're down.
-The headlight-left-on warning chime only works sometimes.

How do I diagnose these issues? I have no idea where to even start. Surely it's something simple, but how do I find that something?

for your headlight not coming on start at the light a multi meter and trace the wiring back until you find the area giving issues. I am picking you may have a broken wire/terminal that is making connection once the wiring is flipped to the up position. thats all I caqn suggest sorry. you may find that this is also your chime problem depending on how that has been set up.

Ive got two 300zx z31s, both seem the same to me ..lights on they up lights down they off .. way of fixing this would be to cut the line leading to the motor control so that it only that the lights will rise is on the button.

you want issues lol ive got them .. speedo only works half the time randomly flicks on with lights etc ... fuel gauge just comes on and off randomly ... ive run multi over everything cant find the dodge earth ..

Heh, that gives me hope. Thankfully mine isn't quite that buggy.
Nah I know how to make them only flip when I want them to. The problem is that one of them doesn't turn on until it's up, so having it down is pointless.

stumagoo, that's a good start, thanks.

Pour petrol all over it, where it first catches fire, that's where your electrical fault is ;)

The main problem I had with the headlights on my Z31 was the right headlight and the lights would not stay up - I traced this back to a faulting popup lights switch on the dash, where I had to press it on and off several times before it came right.
