Should I be alarmed?

    Hi All,

Was just driving to work this morning and as a turned out of a corner, I thought I'd test out my new Federal 595 RSR rear tyres and gave the girl some juice. Got her to abour 5-6K rpm and she hesitated and gave out a clunck and all I saw in the rear view mirror was a puff of grey smoke. Did I do some damage? Was running on 14psi and seemed to run OK afterwards, nothing unusual after that. Anything, I should check? or is it something that happened out of the blue?

    thanks in advance

I dont have any turbo knowledge as mine is NA, but may i ask what temp the engine was at? also maybe it's your seals in your turbos letting some oil into your exhaust?

Clunk sound wise that doesn't seem too healthy :/

To be honest I wont run anymore than 12psi on stock injectors after checking with nissan conzult.

Was your fuel very low ?

No, plenty for fuel, temp was pretty normal, I'm hoping it's just a one off thing, but still would like to know what caused it.

Actually, I'll probably try and do the same thing again when after work and see if it happens again. Hoping it doesn't though.

Since you are leaving work and it is cold there is a bit of fuel enrichment going on. It might just be getting a gut full of fuel and stumbling.

    mine did similar

I had a similar incident with mine and it was diagnosed as overboosting, planted foot one day on the way home from work and whern the revs got up it was like hitting a brick wall, loud clunk and big shudder, grey smoke but ran fine afterwards. ended up dropping the boost to 12 pounds and never had a problem again ;).
    hope this helps, Andy

Kool, sounds similar, gonna adjust the boost to 12psi. Thanks

One other question, does running on high boost, ie 12psi suck up more fuel? or same as running on 7psi? and does it cause wear to the engine/turbos more?

Not a guru on this - but from what I know

Technically no but as there is more exhaust gas being recycled there is a higher fuel mixture being fed into the chamber (the motor tries to compensate for that as well)

Yes will certainly cause more wear to turbo's as there is more pressure, the more pressure the more they need to idle longer after such high boosts to drop pressures/ heat down lower before stopping the engine (relieve pressure)

There is more pressure on motor with higher boost so there will be slightly higher wear on motor but the real issue is with the turbo's

    Misszens other evil half

basic formula = more boost more fuel :)

Possible blocked cat? I think Mitch had a similar situation when his cat was blocked, then threw out a s***load of black stuff out the exhaust.

That can actually also occur when you don't drive it hard enough, often enough stuff gets blocked up! true story!

Unless you turn up the boost with a laptop running recording the entire trip so you can review peak duty cycle anything over 12psi is a bad idea. Sure they're all different but then again they are all 370cc injectors and I can tell you mine are reaching over 90% duty cycle at 12psi.

What about a misfire. If you missed a beat it would product a pop and puff smoke as the unburnt fuel ignites in the exhaust/turbo manifold.

If your tune hasn't changed, your fuel maps haven't changed. Fuel consumption is governed by your right foot.

(of course assuming o2's, boost leaks etc are all good)
