Haha seems as though that won't be a problem for this guy, would rather spend a heap of money converting to a slicktop than just replacing the seals again.. but sure. If it helps him sleep at night :p

I just wanted to see if it was doable and how much it would cost. Would it make the inside of the car cooler being slicktop and not having a glass roof? Or would it be possible to insulate the targas so they dont get so hot? Ive tried chopping up a windscreen reflector and putting it up there between the shade and glass but it didnt really help. (I didnt think it really would just wanted to see). Any other ideas on how to make it cooler?

    Solution :)

    Targa shades - $50
    Targa seals - $75 each
Full car tint including targas - $180

This will keep your car cooler than it would be now...and if it gets that hot just turn on your aircon if you have it.

I seem to recall a number of dire warning re: tinting targa's. Seems they like to explode when hot(once tint has been applied).

I'm lead to believe it's nothing but an old wives tale. My old TT survived a CQ summer sitting outside with tinted targas and they never cracked or were damaged even after enduring 40+ degree heat. No idea how long the previous local owner had the targas tinted for either.

Chili i have heard that too but have never seen any proof of this happening. I have however seen plenty of zeds that have tinted targas and they have no issues at all. My current targas have a tint aswell but i will be getting them darker so it matches my paint job.

I saw tint the targas...if it does blow up then you can always replace the targas...i highly doubt they would as so many zeds are driven every day that have tinted targas.

That's very interesting, because the warnings against "tinting" Targa's has been posted on this site numerous times in the past(and no-one has ever dismissed that advice until now).
After 12 years of Z32 ownership(and nearly twice that long lusting after one)I have NEVER seen one single example of a Z32 with aftermarket tint on a Targa panel.
I have seen countless instances of side/rear glass, some almost impossible to see through(my Brothers car comes immediately to mind)but not one of those had tinted Targa panels.:zlove:

As a matter of interest, how do you successfully apply tint film to the inside of the Targa glass, when it is covered in those small black "pimples"(every one of which is likely to cause a small blister/air-pocket between tint film and glass)?:confused:

Chili, it's no different to tinting the hatch window. If you look closely it too has those ceramic? dots around it. I vaguely remember reading somewhere that window tinters may glue the edges of the tint to these ceramic parts if they have trouble adhering.

If you ask Anti kindly, he may post up some pictures of his tinted targas off my old TT.

nah man, I ripped all that shit off. didn't want my roof to explode.

it was some form of very cheap feeling stuff. very thick, peeled off easily with no residue. Went out to the OEM tinted edges.

Been There Done That ... Got ridiculed for it.

Been There Done That ... Got Ridiculed for it, but definitely achieved the objectives of greatly reduce temperature and greatly reduce road noise.

Process ... scratch up glass, prime, undercoat and paint.
Stick on under glass insulation with targa covers permanently glued in place.

P.S. no peeling or cracks after 11 years and two paint jobs.

    donor

use a donor roof from a 2+0 slick top, same length as a 2+2 just slightly diferent line, ie; slightly more curved. The extra length of the 2+2 is added after the door ;).
