Hey guys ive been having smoke out the exhaust for awhile now i was told by a few ppl not to worry its just condensation coz the cars been sitting for a few months even tho i start it every week and run it for 10-20mins.

Im really starting to get worried tho today i started her up and lil bit of smoke on start up went away after 15mins of idle i decided to rev it a bit didnt go over 2500rpm and the smoke started again then when i let off the gas the smoke reduces.

So when i rev more smoke, Idle still smoke but less, It also has this weird kinda smell to it to hard to explain it almost burns your nostrils and is very strong.

Took a vid of what the smoke looks like that was awhile ago tho and its raining in the vid but it does it when its stinking hot and dry as well all though it looks a lil less steam like when its hot.

    Any help/advice would be awesome

    Cheers. Jamie

Is it correct that the smoke is white ?. Does it stink when it smokes ?.

I wouldn't call it white more of a grey and it smells almost sweet but burns your nose at the same time.

I'd wouldn't leap that far yet. Have you had to keep topping up coolant recently?

As i said the car hasnt been driven in about 6 months the lvls in the reservoir wer a bit low but not empty. The Rad is brand new and i flushed the system when i put it in.

I haven't had any overheating probs while its be sitting and idleing for 30mins so maybe i was jumping the gun with the head im just in panic mode atm >_<

    Stop scareing the poor bugger,

    It looks suspicously like condensation.

What was the air temperature at the time being Vic, most probaly freezing.

If you just start the car and let it idle then it will definitely bring moisture into the exhaust. Bring it up to temp and go for a decent drive. I drained a good 2L out of each of my rear mufflers by simply idling the car once a week over a period of 3 months or so.

By the end of it the amount of steam coming out was ridiculous.

    steam

If you look at how the vapour is acting after it leaves the exhaust then you will realise that it is steam and not smoke:eek:. I would sugest you take the car for a good run checking all the fluid levels before hand and then see how it looks afterwards. As mentioned before your exhaust is probrably holding a bit of moisture due to starting, warming up and then let to sit in the cool weather.

to be completely sure, take off your rear pipes, its easy to do, make sure they have no water build up, and try again

As previously mentioned, if the "smoke" has a sweetish/acidic kind of smell it is definitely coolant(burning oil is unmistakable and blue in colour). That looks and acts very much like coolant(it disburses/vanishes quickly)while oil smoke will hang around for some time.

If it is head gasket a short run will cause it to overheat.

If it has been sitting for months, then take it for a good run to get it up to temp and burn off any condensation/water/sitting oil etc.

If it still smokes at idle after that, first check the PCV valves before panicing.

There are tests for headgaskets etc but overheating is a definate sympton.

The problem is i cant take it out for a good drive and see if that fixs it coz the rego is suspended til i provied a RWC but its going in to the shop on Wednesday to get the rack put in so il ask the mechanic to have a look.
