Engine stalls

    Hi All,

I've had my 300zx nearly 3 years. TT 5sp manual 2+2. Bought it with a blown head gasket. Took my time getting it back together and had it running very well. Got it back on the road but then the engine started cutting out. Only a few moments at first but it got worse over a few weeks and got to the point where it is undriveable. I'm going crazy trying to figure it out. Its been like this for over 6 months now.

Engine will start every time as normal, but stalls shortly after. Maybe 15 seconds or so. Can fiddle with throttle to keep it going a bit longer but it wont rev much over 2000 even with full throttle and it has nearly no power.

Have tried swapping ECU, tested spark on all plugs, injectors all click, replaced fuel pump, tested throttle bodies, ignitor (s1 but tried a fair number of them), fixed any vacuum leaks, tested cam sensor, replaced engine temp sensors and finally replaced engine wiring loom.

    Compression test came up fine.

Im thinking of trying to take injectors out and get them checked over.

Any suggestions? Any 300zx mechanics/businesses in the north/west of Melbourne?

Can take a video if that helps.

    Gary

Air flow meter maybe? I had a skyline doing this once, swapped afm and it was perfect

    oh yeh, Daz

re read, and car wont rev over 2000 in most cases with a bad AFM

(just replaced the AFM in my friends R32 last week after having the same issue)

That's what mine was a r32. Very common, in some cases the solder on the circuit board breaks down, and gets a bad connection. I re soldered my mates few years back, and is still working to this day.

12 engine not running, 14 running. I've got a voltmeter hooked up by chance. :)

Stock intercoolers. Actually pretty stock car except for a MINES ecu but I've tried stock ECU as well. Has had a manual conversion.

Sorry didn't mention tried another AFM, was early on. Might get hold of the spare again now that I've swapped engine loom. Seems an obvious solution.

I've had ECU talk running when i've been working on it and throttle read out correlates to how im pushing the peddle. not sure what % but it looks OK?

sound like you are running out of fuel to me. Have you replaced the filter? Check the fuel pressure.....

Start with the easiest thing - check for error codes. The 'wont rev over 2k' points to the afm and you should have an error code to confirm this. Might be wiring rather than the actual afm. . . .

tassuperkart Its a lie I tell you!

Im willing to bet on a failing CAS. Despite what "tests" were done.
Swap it with a known working one and see what happens.

Yeah CAS or AFM, the CAS can fail without throwing up a code, mine stumped me for a few weeks with this until it finally threw up an ignition code. Once cleared the code never came up again, even though i still had issues.
