XU1 is a lot older too. How many good Z32's will be around in 20 years time?

I'd like restore an old school V8 when my sons are old enough to help & learn. Problem is they're getting expensive to buy these days. Saw a guy cruising in a pristine white XW GT (replica?) the other weekend; he had a big grin on his face.

There were 3 or 4 XU1s competing at the Winton Historic races on the weekend and one 240Z so I guess that makes the Z more unique.

There were about 25 Amilcars too so they must be common as muck.

Market value, insured value, sentimental value, sunk cost vale, and value to me.

Market value is what John Q Public is prepared to pay for a 21year old sportscar, which irrespective of condition is bigger all. I have my eye on a nice red convertible with stillen body kit as its price slides down, but alas I have not spare garage space.

Insured value is what the insurance company will pay on my cars demise. This is a lot more than market value.

Sunk cost value is all the money I have spent on her over the years. Which makes the insured and market values look like a bad joke.

Value to me is the price to buy a replacement which would service to same role of transport and stir my soul and bring a smile to my face. A lot more than market value, more than insured value, less than sunk cost.

    Sentimental value ... priceless.

    Elasticity

Its called elasticity of supply and demand (google it) the more desperate the supply is to sell the more elastic their price expectation, hence the demand side know this and us it against you (market power is transparent, so the buyers use it against the seller) as not only do they have options in terms of what zed to purchase they have the entire car market to choose from (substitution effect)

I think the zed market has two types of people older, established, decent, steady income middle age (gen x and baby boomers) and then there poor just out of school, student types (gen y) with low unstable incomes. Unfortanunately most of the ones with cash also are patient and have some technical abilities hence would rather build there own 15K-20K car up from a stock standard 6-8K base.

Hypothetically, my thinking to your dilemna has been assuming you have your zed insurred for a decent amount, cant sell it and have decent insurance history arrange to have it stolen or even better yet steal it yourself take it to an isolated spot, strip all the good bits off it and torch it. Of course I dont condone such action... ;)

mate i copped a bit of slack for asking almost $10k for my non turbo. Had a fair few serious buyers along the way (collected some deposits too), still looking for the sale but have interest every week regardless.

When its in mint condition and has been babied most of its life you cannot price it with the poorly maintained. I would rather put it in my garage permanently than to sell to some twit without the money to look after it for $5k 'cause thats what the others are worth..

Another market force is "what other performance cars are you up against ". Under 10k a 300z tt/na is the top choice for bang v buck.

Above 10k ? well you are in a different strata.

Not everyone is a zed freak. I reckon most people who would be looking at a performance car will be applying some sort of scale like this. I know that above 15k I am thinking rx7 FD or supra as well as a sorted 300z tt. In that order.

I own a 260z and the same thing is happening in that market as well. Everyone thinks a datto is worth 25k ... guess what ? They aint selling. If you want to SELL the car you have to meet the market.

I would rather sit my zed in the shed for 20 years and let it appreciate rather than sell it for less than 15k it's my gig and I would rather be buried in it than let it go any cheaper.
I don't care what the so called market is my zed and it is what it is.

I've had mine on carpoint for about 3 weeks, 15721 hits and zero enquiries. I think that tells us where the market is at.

Big difference is it's not Japanese. Mint 240Zs don't even go for that much. Unfortunately that's just the way things are when it comes to cars. Jap stuff is worth less than US or Euro stuff as it ages.

The few Japanese cars that rose in value due to rareness are things like the 2000GT and that's because there's only 300 something made.

For Z32s there's apparently 164,170 produced. 99,286 of them exported and 64,84 kept for the JDM market.

Assuming half have survived and still kicking there's still 80,000 of them, most of them in the states obviously. This isn't based on anything but optimistically let's say there's maybe 10,000 in Aus? It's certainly no commonwhore but not exclusive enough to go up in value.

Let's say that number drops below 1,000 in Aus. Then it's actually going to go up and people will start forking over for a good one. Even then you still need a enthusiast to come along and pay that kind of money since to some it's just old jap crap.

Just to put that into perspective:

    - there's only 45,223 JZX80 Supras ever produced. Less than a 1/3 of all the Zs out there... and you wonder why Supras are generally worth more than our cars. You want a investment? Buy a Supra and wait for numbers to dwindle. The Japs were smart too, they exported only 11,239 to the US and kept the rest for themselves (more for us since they're all RHD).

    - as for the NSX, they hold their value extremely well (even here in Japan). Again because they're exclusive! Only 18,623 were made! I was dreaming of a late spec NSX Type R until I realised they only made 170 of them and go well in excess of 150k here in Japan.

SOLD my 300zx today for what I thought it was worth

    Hi all

Good news, sold my 300ZX today and more so for what I thought it was worth. There was some good healthy conversation in this thread but I still maintain that a Z is worth only what the seller wants

I held out for what I wanted and what I thought she was worth. I was NOT going to allow someone else even a prospective buyer dictate what my 300ZX is worth. I held out and I've been rewarded with the amount I wanted and the buyer liked the car.

I could have sold for $8000 or $10,000 but I realized my 300ZX was worth $13,200 and I also had a buyer who agreed. If he knocked me back. I had another $13,200 buyer lined up, if he also knocked me back I would have simply kept looking for someone who valued her at $13,200 like I do.

I eventually sold her for $13,000 only a poultry $200 shy.

I still stand firm that NO one will dictate to me what my 300ZX is worth.
    Cheers,Pete

Oh , the new owner might join the forum because I raved about it to him so expect to see a new member called Roger.
